Got a dented passenger side panel on the hood of my ‘87 379. I order a replacement from 4 States, with a bolt kit. The existing side panel is riveted on. What’s the best way to remove the rivets from the fender, grill surround and upper hood, from the side panel?

I’d try an air chisel and and punch.

You miss with a grinder or chisel and you're repairing the hood also. Takes about 15 minutes to drill them out.

I guess you’re drilling them from the outside, inward?

Easiest from outside. Just use a river bit. Start beating on them from either side with a chisel and the flange gets out of shape and you don't get a good fit.

After those responses, I'd be thinking about taking it to a body shop with experience. But - I'm a bit timid when it comes to tackling tasks I'm ill prepared or knowledgeable in.

PB shops have the special tool to pop them babies out in minutes. Granted there will be a charge for the service. As they pop one off put a bolt in there to hold it in place and drive back to your shop. Remove bolts, replace side panel. Thats my plan for when I do my fenders.

Aluminum hucks are easy to drill through, the steel ones suck. About the time you are finished you'll find the best way
