Ok, so after getting everything I needed I started applying to companies that train and I boiled it down to 2 companies, Millis and Estes.
Applied for the driver training at Millis and for a dockworker position at Estes and got accepted to Millis and a offer for Estes.
Thing is with Estes, they need drivers, and will train, but since the changes to the cdl schooling, they dont have a dedicated school set up yet, and would likely take until June until its ready (hopefully, not set in stone). I would have a job on the dock until then.
Millis I would start next month at the school then go otr for the training.
With the world being a cluster #### right now, and all of these changes to the cdl, and all these people going nuts with vax mandates, I am thinking Millis to get my CDL in hand before any other crazy stuff goes down.
Anybody have a opinion on this?
And to be clear I really like the flexibility on schedules for Estes and dont really want to go otr(unless I like it idk yet) but once again I think license in hand asap is the way to go.

Tough call - I'd hate to get strung along by Estes, June is a long way away.

Any chance you can get that CDL on your own dime and have more power?

Not really, I dont mind owing the company a year for my training tbh, and Millis is really cheap compared to the others both in price, and in the time
to pay it off. And unless I can get something in writing from Estes as far as a time frame and a guaranteed spot on the school list, I would go with Millis anyway. Estes manager seems like a good dude, but I been screwed by "good dudes" before if it benefits them.

we're ex ODFL - have you approached them? I'm pretty sure they have a dock worker to driver program. We did well with them.

I'd be wary of the "Maybe June" string along.

Worst case - suck it up for the 1 year commitment with Millis and stick it out.

@Chinatown is good at finding state sponsored training for cheaper.

Hey - All this screaming about a driver shortage - you'd have thought the path to a job would be easier , right?!

Far as I know Millis no longer requires 1 year of service to get CDL. My current trainee who already passed his CDL test can quit anytime and walk away free and clear.

The thing Millis doesn’t really advertise is if you go to school in Cartersville Ga or Richfield WI. Is you test for your CDL on the very last day of class. The other schools Millis has you go out with a trainer before testing.

I would be going to the one in Carslile PA. I did read the contract, its definitely a year or I would have to pay $2500.
It's 3 weeks of schooling/training, then take the test and go out with trainer otr for 15000 miles.

I'd go with Millis and do that for 12 mos. then Estes will put you right in a truck and probably a coveted line haul position.

That’s odd my current trainee had to pay for his own hotel room in Cartersville. Didn’t have to put any money down for school. Got paid $600 a week while in school. Tested for CDL came out with me and can quit at any point. Maybe it depends on which school someone would go to. Who knows…..

Everything for me is the same, except for the quit anytime part. I just reread the contract and if I do a year driving for them I owe them nothing. But if I quit or get fired, I owe them 2500. Still way cheaper than any of the other schools tbh.

The line haul position is the one the guy was telling me about. Is it really that good?
