Intercooler or not?

I have a 1989 international 9300. It had a tired, million + mile 444 Cummins engine that I just pulled to swap for a 1991 mechanical N14 from a wrecked fire truck with only 65,000 original miles. Sweet running engine! My problem is that the 444 had a water cooled intake airbox originally on it and the N14 has an intercooler. I don't have room for the intercooler in front of my radiator. It's just a stock 410hp N14. Nothing turned up. If I just bypass the intercooler and pipe it straight from the turbo over the engine to the intake box will I create any problems? I realize I'll probably lose a few HP but doubt it'll be significant. Back in the summer I converted the 444 from low flow to high flow cooling. When I did I had to take off my water cooled intake and use a different intake box. It's been fine with no issues for 7-8 months now without the water cooled box on it. I just don't want to cause problems with this low mileage engine but there's no room for an intercooler. I really hate to put that old water cooled box on it if it isn't necessary. There's some hose retrofitting involved that I don't want to do. Thoughts?

I would look for a set up from a newer truck. There is a 9400? with an N14, high flow and charge air cooler around here. Thank that would work in your 9300. What I would want to do. I thank OldSchoolerWV has something like that.
Without a cooler you are over fueling for the amount of oxygen in the cylinder and cylinder temperatures can go up. If you never stand on it long it would probably be fine.
If the 444 cooler will fit on the N14 that would probably the least expensive way to go and better than no cooler.

Would it not be the same amount of oxygen feeding the engine just a little warmer?

It causes the air to be denser. Changes the air fuel ratio. Probably sounds like BS but ask a small air plane pilot about it.
Winter to summer and different altitudes change the lift factor of planes.

I can tell a difference in the power my modern day engine makes between summer and winter, and the higher in elevation I go, the less pull it has. I could only imagine how bad a truck would pull without a CAC.

And that fire truck engine might only have 65k miles, but I bet it has a lot of hours on the it because fire trucks don't shut off when they're fighting a fire, so if it came from an area that had a lot of fires to fight, that engine might have a lot of idle time.

Like I said that 444 we had already converted it to high flow and I removed the wcac when I did that and I could not tell a difference at all in power loss. And yeah I figured the hours were a little higher than normal on the fire truck for the mileage it has. But it was from a volunteer department and service is typically minimal at a volunteer department versus paid departments. I know it's better than what we had this engine is clean as a pen and our 444 was a tired greasy pig that seeped oil from almost every gasket on it. I think I'm going to run it with the intercooler deleted and see what it runs like before I go to the trouble of swapping on the wcac off of that 444.

Pretty sure part of the idea of the low flow cooling was to optimize the effectiveness of the aftercooler. If converted, obviously N-14 CAC would be best.
