And then a great analogy followed up by a technical description. All kinds of quality learning. Thanks.

Most of your modern autos are 12 speed, basically a 13 speed that doesn't use the granny low gear. The last auto I drove, would skip gears(not split), even when loaded unless I was pushing 78-80k lbs, then it would use every gear(split). Empty, it would skip 2 on occasion.

Use to drive a 1981 Cabover Freightliner, 300 Formula with a 7 speed. Hated that setup for driving in Appalachain area….

would splitting gears be the same as it is in a Super 10 speed then? Whereas it does the actual shift for you?

Air over hydro. press with a remote. This way you can get behind a block wall.

Used to do some favors for the Snapon man. Put tape on sockets so you don't have to look threw the entire tool room for pieces.

Correct. The Super 10 is based on the 13/18. It's only a 3 speed main instead of a 5 speed, and the shift tower does the range shift, but it's the same as far as the splits go. Just a wider split than a 13.

When I had an 18, the only time I normally split the bottom was skip shifting when empty or downhill while loaded. And the rare occasion where you caught a light on a steep uphill.

Instead of going from, say, 1L to 3L, you could go 1L to 2H so it wasn't as big a jump. Your next shift would be to 4L.

Your question seems to mainly focus on ‘splitting’ gears, and how to split them.

I’m not much with words, but I’ve shifted many gears in the last 36 years. See if this helps.

Your question is on a 18 speed which gives the ability to split all gears. And the 13 only splits the upper gears in the high side of the transmission, so I’ll use the 13.

After shifting the low range gears 1/2/3/4 you will obviously split to the high side.

Once in the high side, you can begin splitting all the gears. At this point you will be in 5th gear with the thumb button in the high range ‘or’ direct position.

Your next shift will be shift from 5 direct, to 5 overdrive simply by moving the thumb button to the OD position and letting up on the throttle to relieve he pressure on the gears, and allowing the transmission to go into OD.

Your next shift will be from 5/OD to 6/DIRECT… ease up on the throttle till the shifter eases out of 5th and as it starts into 6th move the thumb button from OD to DIR. You just split 2 gears at once. many like myself never use the clutch, but you can.

On the next shift simply move the thumb button from 6/DIR to 6/OD.

Now your ready to split gears again… 6/OD to 7/DIR. Making sense??

So this is what you’re doing…

    Shift 5/DIR to 5/OD

    Split 5/OD to 6/DIR

    Shift 6/DIR to 6/OD

    Split 6/OD to 7/DIR

    Shift 7/DIR to 7/OD

    Split 7/OD to 8/DIR

Then shift in to the big cog… 8/DIR to 8/OD.

On the 18 you just split all the gears in this fashion. Hope this makes some sense, I’m not much with words….

Thanks. Such a simple way of explaining that in something used in our normal, everyday life! Lol

Indeed! This is why I love hearing from multiple drivers. Even when you know your stuff, you can always learn something new or a new way of doing something that might be easier for you, then what someone else might have taught you.
