I am working on a 3406b/c I bought as a core engine
I popped the pan off this afternoon and looked at #6 rod bearing it was convenient this one has the girdle made of 1/2 inch plate. Any way the truck has around 800k on it I doubt the bearings are original.
Does anyone know if they date code the bearings?
Also I have seen some odd wear on a c13 where the bearings have holes in them this has the same but not as bad crank looks awesome though
The pics are the bottom half of the bearing
The top has one score mark probably from the pieces that came out of the hole both halves have some of the same stuff mashed into them.![]()

As far as date codes I can’t say usually a date will be plain to see with month and year. Not all manufactures do it though. The top rod bearings always wear faster than the bottom. Timing can make that better or worse. That little spot by the tang on the one in your hand almost looks like antifreeze. That will peel the outer coating. However for what it’s worth I would say 80 percent of the B and C motors I have tore down have that very same mark on them.
spsauerland, stuckinthemud and Oxbow Thank this. -
Pretty sure the cavitation is pretty normal on B rod bearings. IPD came out with a grooved bearing for just that reason.
Oxbow, stuckinthemud and Goodysnap Thank this. -
Thanks for the insight woreout and spsauerland.
Most everything non cat that I have had apart has a pretty obvious date code I didn’t know if some of those other letters were but anyway I am just trying to figure out what I have. I don’t think it’s had antifreeze in it this oil change no sign otherwise and it’s full of bright clean green antifreeze. Don’t know what might have been in the bottom of the pan as someone at the salvage yard was kind enough to drain it with their pallet fork.
Looking up at the pistons and liners it looks really good. Thinking about a dyno run and decide weather to o/h or just roll in some bearings.
Is it normal for the turbo piping to have double hose clamps it’s atac -
Also interesting that the top rod bearing looks as good or better than the bottom
Oxbow Thanks this. -
On the date on bearing, that is NUMERALKOD. Here is the chart
So, yours a UUDN would be November of 1990. -
Thanks
I guess they were replaced early on and then forgot about
It’s a 88 or 89my truck can’t remember for sure
Interesting one valve cover with 88 and one with 91 who knows also a 7e5888 fuel pump -
What is engine serial #. I can get build date.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Also, what kind of truck. I can check KW or Peterbilt for original engine S/N.
Oxbow Thanks this.
