We’re not allowed to say ‘retarder’ anymore. :)

Milr72 and Bean Jr. Thank this.

Call them BrakeSavers instead. You’ll only get a blank look and you won’t be charged with a hate crime.

AModelCat, Milr72 and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Just angry looks from mechanics when they see you used the completely wrong term for what youre refering to

What that other post was referring to had nothing to do with slowing anything down. But anyways. Compression brakes, stalled fluid, dynamic and exhaust brakes are all retarders.

But you need to be gender specific .. when using a certain term... because with CAT .. there is a Brake Saver and also a engine " re..tarder"
Cummins is engine compression brake a/k/a Jake brake
And Diptroit.. it's just referenced as throwing out the anchor

I've seen low or contaminated oil make the jakes quit working. Also clutch switch stuck or throttle switch loose or backed out. Popped fuse is fairly common on some. It's a really simple system, check for power, pull covers and press on a solenoid watch for oil!

You forgot the noisemaker. Dynatard. That was probably the only thing more useless than a Jake on a Cat.
