I worked briefly for a company like that. The shop guy was adamant that you floated the gears rather then using the clutch so you wouldn't wear it out.

Exactly this. You put me in a tractor that's different from my bid truck, and I'm grinding em til I'm finding em. That's just how it is.

And to OP...if you know how to float gears, that's the optimal way to do it. But if you don't know how to float gears, you're gonna tear the tractor up.

What they should have done is TAUGHT you how to float gears, and told you to practice it on the highway, where you have some speed and cars can get around your slow ###. :D

Once you can go from sitting to highway speed floating gears, you're ready to try it in traffic, where it can matter a little more.

But they fired you. So now you can learn it at another company.

OK it wears out faster, But the drive line lasts longer with smooth shifting.

I doubt that all of the farm operations are always up to date with their opinion about operating equipment.
My son worked on a farm during school time. They did some yard work around the house. They used a small utility tractor for that. The owners got upset when he pulled the parking brake while the tractor was parked. It would wear out, they said. One of the farmer's sons was even a mechanic.

Sorry to here you lost your job over that.
I actually float better than I can double shift so when I drive I will always do a couple of take offs double clutching just to keep myself somewhat proficient at it incase I have to do a driving test.

    I quit using loaner trucks.
Easy way is catch the shop foreman out going to lunch or whatever, grind it loudly into gear and jump and buck and rev up and bounce and get out of truck, throw your cap on the ground and say loudly, “I’m not driving this POS truck!!! either get mine fixed or call me when it’s ready.”

These Farmers are getting fancy with their Trucks lately. What happened to the old Cornbinder, 13 letter #### spreader. Must be making some money.

Sometimes it was a matter of how equipment was spec’d out.
We used to have a fleet of KW T-680s with Cummins ISX engines with 10 speeds (a combination that had a history of grinding gears despite drivers efforts to float). We also had a fleet of Freightliner Cascadias equipped with the same powertrain combination (Cummins ISX/10 speed) and those were much more easier to float-they actually ran like a raped ape!
