I got out of the service with a CDL in hand in 2012, PLUS 8 years of driving, which included some of the most dangerous driving conditions in Iraq where people were actively trying to kill us. And I don't mean cutting us off or hogging two lanes.

When I got out, I applied at 5 local companies. Some laughed off my experience and others just gave me a simple no.

Not only was there a 5 year experience required, but there was a waiting list for those jobs.

The hiring climate has changed a lot from just 10 years ago.

It pissed me way off that trucking companies wouldn't hire me when I got of the Army. But it was the insurance companies that set the hiring requirements. Since 2017 it has shocked me how some of these companies have changed there criteria though.

Hell even when I went back to Iraq and drove for the Govt contractor. Once I came back to the U.S. most companies said my time driving for the contractor doesn't count. Thats when I said to my self to hell with the typical OTR outfits. It will be only private carriers from then on.
