I understand according to FMCSA that tint on a big truck is illegal, but can I get away with a tint strip or should I just get a visor? I’m tired of sun in my eyes.

I'm sure you'll find some DOT officer who'll take offense to it. I'd do it anyway. I personally don't like tint, makes it difficult to see anything at night.

Yes, and I’m about ready to peel the top strip off. I find myself crouching forward in the seat because visually, my eyes want to see through the clear glass, not the tinted strip.

    If that makes any sense.

If the windshield has an asi line (visually marked “asi”) on glass usually within 2 -1/2 to 4” from top then that is were tint can legally go to. Dot can do nothing about it if it is not lower than that line. If the glass was factory tinted it would be in that area anyway.

Tint shop slang for that strip down in these parts is “eyebrow”. You tell them that they know what to do for you.

I've got one. About the same height as the interior visors, I've not had any issues. I'm also a carhauler, so that part of the windshield is blocked by the headrack anyways. My visors are always down, and you really have to look to notice it's there.

there's a little black tick mark on the top edge of the glass like 5 inches down, anything above that is good for whatever you want. get 3M ceramic 70% on the sides and windshield too, no more UV sunburn on the left arm, the AC actually stands a fighting chance at keeping it cold with a 15 degree assist when it's 100 degrees, and the film is so thick it acts as functional acoustic insulation to lower the ambient noise in the cab coming through the glass. plus i swear it adds structural rigidity to the windshield, I've caught some big chunks of road stuff since getting it on, sizes that would always used to crack it edge to edge every 4 months before, but now no cracks, loud af SMACK but no chips or cracks, i think the film acts like a damper to absorb energy so the glass doesn't flex enough to crack.

70% isn't legal, though. You slap 70% film on 90% clear glass and you're down to 63%. Put it on tinted glass (70-80%, normally) and you're down around 50%. And in the states that care, that will get you stopped and measured. (looking at you, Iowa)

Iowa is bad they carry meters with them... I had a 2 hr run in with 1 on Valentines evening about it
I have tinted windows in my truck but it came new with clear glass .. I was legal by 2% according to his meter but the battle started when his reasoning for pulling me over was for tinted windows.. pretty hard to tell I have tinted windows when you meet me at 60 mph and it's dark thirty.. he found no humor with my address for my company on my battery box either that's when he turned into a typical Iowa state dick then the nit picking started

20% on the sides and an 11x7 reverse bow tie visor work about perfect for me…
