If I'm allowed to name names, I will.

My empty weight, with full tanks is 28k. I can legally put 52k on the deck.

Rate con says 46k for crushed cars out of the Chicago area, and they're always putting more on than they should.

I'm willing to take 48k, but they claim the agreement they have with the broker is no truck leaves under 78k.

I've had enough. Today, I was scaling out and was at 76,900. They went to send me back to get another car put on, and I said:

"Then he can take it all off. The rate con says 46k and I'm tired of you guys overloading me."

Scale guy relays it to the boss, and the response was a sigh and said fine.

I told the scale guy it was nothing against him, but getting a flat rate does not warrant extra weight. He agreed with me, gave me my paperwork and sent me on my way.

A little curious as to what'll happen next time when they put 50k on me and I tell them I'm going back to have a car taken off.

Here's the thing folks. I don't care if it's the industry standard, and I don't care what agreement they have with the broker. You want me to haul more weight, then pay by the hundred weight and not a flat rate. Make it worth it.
If they up the weight on the rate con, but not the rate, I'll DH home, and never go back to that shipper.

Will it hurt them? Not likely. But I'm not going to kill my truck because they want to try and bully me into hauling freight for free, because that's what that is.

If they loaded 23k on you, would you give half the rate back?

I've played on both sides of this. I understand what ur saying. With flatbed u should expect to be loaded to gross most of the time... Just the nature of the game. Especially with bulk materials like steel, scrap, lumber, building materials, etc....

Not saying u did anything wrong here... u can run ur business how u like and I respect `what u did.. Just saying it's how a lot of flatbed shippers operate.

Does anybody out here not treat shipper/receivers like ####? I thought it was common practice to treat most these idiots like trash

It is all in the details. If that is what the contract says we do as the contracts. I treat people with respect because I'm a respectful person. If I'm dealing with disrespectful people. I'm still going to be respectful without becoming like the fools I'm dealing with. :D

Tibbit ... I have no problem with hauling the 46k, or even 48k (2k above the agreed upon amount), but when you're putting 50k+ on the deck, that's abusing my equipment. If the rate con said 23k for half the rate, I wouldn't have taken it because it would not have been worth it.

If the broker said I could have the same rate for half the weight, then yes I would have taken it. I would prefer to get paid by weight, but the broker won't do that, and I don't have my own numbers ... Yet ... When I do, I will try to negotiate rates based on weight, and if the broker refuses (as is their right), then I won't haul their freight.

Shippers and receivers don't really care about us; remember COVID? Not allowed to enter the building, have to use the port a John in freezing temps, etc.

I haul a lot of more specialized type loads but once in awhile I’ll get that lumber load or?

Had a load of lumber. Bol said 35k
I could scale 47k in that truck and was 2k over at the scale
Company had zero issues paying the ticket but after all that I started thinking. They knew and got extra weight shipped for $100 or whatever it was dollars

The rate con I get says 46k of crushed cars. as I said earlier, I'm fine with taking an extra couple thousand, but any more without compensation for extra wear on the equipment? No thank you.

Crushed cars suck anyways…… I don’t think you did anything wrong.

they’ll probably tell the broker your not allowed back.

Not saying u did anything wrong at all.... Just saying that its the way alot of places try to load you when it comes to bulk materials... I dealt with it loading at the rock quarry everyday... I can count on 1 hand how many times i came out of there under 80k, but it was a direct customer for us and it paid good for what it was.

Its no difference than one of my biggest pet peeves is having tracking app on the load... I charge brokers extra money for it, but dont tell them. My rate just goes up another 500 dollars to deal with tracking bs... Some people it doesnt bother them being tracked. But i dont like it and have complained about on here before and it fell on deaf ears.

It just comes down to picking and chosing your battles and what u are willing to do and let people get away with, and for every operator thats different.
