Warm oil drains better also drains more gunk out

 

Run it till temp is like 100'F. It won't burn you then and it will flow better.

 

Its up to you really it will drain better if it is warm, but you can drain it cold, I'd just wait a lot longer before refilling the crankcase, however personally I'd rather warm it up first, for 15 minutes put some engine oil flush in it if it's an older motor, then drain it. I'm going to go back to changing my own oil after recently getting someone else to do the task not only did they charge like an angry rhino but over filled the sump.

 

Any engine should be warm when draining the oil for service. When filling the engine this is easier as well as the oil drains back fast as the engine is allready warm. Filling a cold engine is very easy to overfill.

 

Doesn't matter at all. It's a 13 gallon change, leaving even a gallon in there isn't hurting anything. I stopped changing my oil. I just do filter changes, with a bypass filter. 1 year later, synthetic looks brand new and clear.

 

I do both ways, just depends. I like doing it cold if I have the time. If I'm in a hurry I drop it when I get done for the day.

Funny story. Years ago we were working on equipment. My brother tells this kid "hey go start that stationary engine, let it run for a while then change the oil" kid looks at my brother with a confused look on his face and says "OK but I've never changed oil with the engine running before"
