J.B. Hunt Intermodal

    Hi everyone!
    Hope you are all well, I’m very new to the trucking industry and thought I might ask my question to other truckers. My question is with J.B. Hunts Intermodal division how do they make profits and revenue in this division. From research it seems to me, and I could be wrong, that they purchased solely 53’ shipping containers used for transporting goods on the railway. Is this the only or primary way they make money in this division? Or is it the opposite and they pick up freight from railroads and their services are specifically transporting these goods by putting the freight on their own trucks and carrying it? Also I’ve seen a lot about owner operators only clearing after everything is said and done around 80k a year how do these big companies afford

    ^ to pay drivers if they only make 80k a year minus the drivers salary which would only profit them around 500 a month. Again I’m very confused and would love to learn as much as possible in those topics. Thank you so much!

    First off, as you will find out trucking is one of the most shady and corrupt industries to get into. And dangerous!

    You need to look up the term 'double brokering' and read everything you can about that.
    You will learn why companies want Owner Operators- in short they are easy to steal from.

    A book can be written about the questions you asked, but a good starting point is knowing those 2 things mentioned above

    Thank you for the answer! May I ask on the non shady side how much do you think they profit per truck with an OO or even their own trucks? Or do they even use their own trucks and use only OOs?

    Companies don't generally tell the world what the secret to their success is. IMO, intermodal is not appealing. It seems to be done by almost broke single truck operators that can't afford to fix their trucks. Each time I had contact with railyards or ports, it was more unpaid waiting that I wanted to repeat. I only saw intermodal from outside.

    Thank you for your answer! How much can a company make in profit per truck on average? I’ve read anywhere from 2000 per month to 9000 per month both being companies not owner operators.

    JBHT is publicly traded corporation. It's listed on NASDAQ, IIRC. So if you have the time and REALLY want to know the answer you can look up lots of their financial info. I'm not motivated to do the work to find the answer for you. Maybe someone else is.

    Yes I’ve looked up pretty much the top carriers financial information and most seem to bring in around $30-40,000 per truck a year but don’t know if that’s after investment activities. With the intermodal do they have their own trucks that transport the freight off the railways or is it only owner operators? And it still doesn’t make sense as far as how most answers I’ve seen from owner operators they bring in only 80k net, so how are they making so much money if they’re paying a driver 5000 a month on top of that which would bring it down to 500 a month?

    J.B. uses both company owned trucks and also has owner op's leased to them. My friend who use to work there doing local intermodal in Portland, quit, and after a couple of years leased his truck to them doing rail loads. He did pretty well but I don't know how well. For every rail yard location most of the local drivers will deliver and/or pick up 2-4 loads a day. Times that for every location and your speaking volumes of freight which translates to volumes of revenue. On top of that, they have their fingers in so many pie's they have many streams of revenue, not just from moving freight.
