Possible. Or at least a decent salary. I made just over $40k last year, OTR. My job before trucking was doing security, and I brought home $32k. So 40 isn’t too bad for my first year. I’ve gained just about as much experience as I can with where I’m at, hauling dry van. I’ve been thinking of getting my hazmat and tanker endorsements and driving for Loves or something.

The three hour daily commute alone makes this position a deal breaker. A local job in or around Detroit should pay $250 to $350 a day gross. Keep your commute under 45 minutes each way. You should look at hauling groceries, Foodservice, fuel, LTL and the auto industry.

Get all the endorsements plus TWIC. Once you've done that move to a tanker company.

Doing local work for an OTR company is not really a job. It's just something to do. Even at hourly pay, it doesn't pay that great. If you've got a year, then you can find other local/regional gigs pretty easily.

What’s TWIC? How do I get that? And are there any practice tests for the endorsements that you recommend?
