Three of the last 4 times I've started and drove my truck I noticed the smell of diesel burning and smoke coming into cab through vents. Two times I remember I didn't let the engine warm really much, just started let it build air and went on my way.
When the smoke has come through the vents into cab I also had smoke kind of bellowing under hood. But when I raise the hood I cannot for the life of me see where the fuel is coming from. Then it just stops.
My theory is there must be a bad seal somewhere that after it gets pretty warmed up must seal properly but until then it just leaks just enough fuel on warming up parts to make you worry it's going to catch fire.
Any ideas?

Well only way is to check when you first start it up when it’s cold according to your observation. First place I would look if that’s the case.

Put a socket on the exhaust manifold bolts and check they're tight - then look for exhaust leak/cracks in manifold or exhaust pipe. Soot or black streaks would be a tell tale.

On my truck, I think one of the metal pipes that routes around the rear of the head is a fuel line for the 7th injector. I don't know if all Volvos are done this way, though. Another thing I would think is that the diesel would need high temperature in order to start smoking, like an exhaust manifold or pipe, not just engine temperatures. If that's the case, your leak is likely on the passenger side of the motor, or from the back and running down that way.
If you can remove the doghouse, you should be able to see if you're having issues from there. At the very least, you should be able to clean up around that area.Stringb8n Thanks this. -
