Germany had to pay for the wars anyway.

The Treaty of Versailles (signed in 1919) and the 1921 London Schedule of Payments required Germany to pay 132 billion gold marks (US$33 billion [all values are contemporary, unless otherwise stated]) in reparations to cover civilian damage caused during the war.

That was then, be even more in today’s standard coin.

The article is wrong, we have always had excise taxes, not just in 1917, trucks were not taxed until after WW2. The federal government used excise taxes to pay the Civil War debt which was reduced and items removed in 1916.

The excise tax on trucks are high, relief would be a great thing but better is to eliminate it on tires too.

If they remove FET then it'll be like the weekly sales tax holiday every spring in Tennessee. The state government suspends the sales tax for a weekend and retail prices on everything go up that same 10%.

As long as they are working on taxes, how about returning to the 10% investment credit on truck purchases. Buying new stuff puts people to work and that helps the economy.
