    Hello all

Working on a Detroit 60 series (11.1L) that lives in an International 8300 (1994). The truck as is is currently set up has two spin on fuel filters (primary and secondary). Is it possible (or a good idea) to add a Davco style fuel filter / water separator? I'm having to make new hoses from the pump to the fuel tank and this seems like a good time to change things. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Agree with the others. The two filters worked great, no need to complicate with expensive filter housings.

reporting back on this. i understand people thought it was overkill but i ended up going forward (picked up a used 382 at a local yard) and i got the truck running right.

this may be my lack of experience with this truck and or class 8s in general but the Davco was really a huge help to getting things sorted. being able to see what is happening with the fuel was helpful for me to be able to correctly diagnose what was happening.

So what was happening? BTW, a sight glass can help you identify issues, and running return lines into a bucket of fuel

Lots of stuff happening LOL It's an old ### truck, many problems.

The main issue here was a combination of things. Maintenance by previous owner wasn't stellar so there was some sludge in the fuel tank. Also possible coolant in fuel issue I'm trying to figure out. I'm new to the Detroit 60 and the Davco made it easier for me to see what was happening.

Ok. The Davco made it easier to see, I get it.

But what was the problem? The main issue wasn't a combination of things.

Possible fuel in coolant? Maintenance? You still ain't figured out but it's running right?

So tell me what the Davco told you.

Or just say IHNFI but all is good now

BRS, you're a tough customer! LOL

I'm not sure what the problem is, still working on it. (here's the link to that thread if you're interested/able to help out)

The Davco just made it possible for me to start separating things. The normal setup on this engine is two conventional fuel filters (not easy to see into those). I'm not a Davco salesperson or anything (bought it used from a local yard!) just saying it was easier for me to see it running through the filter than in/out of a bucket.

My whole filter set up is jacked. It’s a long story. Been getting intermittent stumbling and sputtering since an inframe. Suspect it’s sucking air. Only does it occasionally though. Runs great otherwise. Lots of others have the same issue. Anyway, last week it got bad. Came home 200 miles empty. Changed filters. Usually fixes the problem, since it’s much worse when they’re plugged. As usual, I didn’t have time while home to finally find the problem. I need to pressurize the tanks, look for a leak. So I left out, deadheading 120 miles, still stumbling. Even shot a fireball, had me worried. Got to thinking. Sucking air? Probably at the hose connection that was disturbed during the inframe, the one going into the pump. Took some duct tape, wrapped each end of the suction hoses, at the primary filter, and the fuel pump. No more problems. Something so simple. My original suspicion, was the problem. Meanwhile I’ve been wondering if I had a bad (new) injector since one was unpackaged when I got it. Maybe bad harness? Maybe bad ( counterfeit) timing sensor? Bad injector height? And half dozen other possibilities. Oh well. Glad I know now for sure. Now just need new fuel lines. That’s turning out to be a challenge. Outrageous prices, original dealer parts 3 month back order. I want to make my own. No one knows anything. Not Freightliner, not Parker, not NAPA. Can’t believe something so simple can be so hard. Potential prices for 2 suction hoses are as high as $200. Just another example why you can’t just drop it at the shop. I’ll get everything changed out for under $100. Meanwhile the half assed duct tape job will have to do. MPG’s are up .25 per gallon. I also have the wrong filter base on the secondary, thanks to Freightliner parts. Broke mine, bought another. They swore twice, it was the right part, my original was wrong. Anyway, I need to get the filter’s straightened out. The base head cost $320 at the Dealer. Aftermarket’s are $90. Not sure yet what I’ll end up with. I want economical readily available parts. Nothing fancy. Apparently even that’s a challenge nowadays. Big disconnect between parts, availability, and especially pricing. If you’re not careful, things can end up costing big $$$ for simple stuff. I can imagine my Truck in the shop, swapping injectors, sensors, etc. Big bill, and same problem still exists. That’s how it happens. Usually it’s something very basic and simple. Instead of big theories involving big repair bills.
