Hey, everyone, I'm a mechanical engineering university student doing some research on reefer fuel burn, and I was hoping you could help me out by sharing some insights. Specifically, I'm wondering about how much fuel your reefers (the actual cooling unit) typically burn in a year, what kind of driving you usually do (long haul or last mile), the routes you drive (hot climates or cold climates), and if you've tried any new technology or made any changes to reefer settings to reduce fuel consumption. Please feel free to answer as many or as few questions as you'd like. Thanks in advance for your help

Long haul, spent just under 8k last year. Some types of products you can put on start and stop, which saves fuel, others should be set on continuous.

Watch a guy fill his truck and reefer with reefer fuel last Friday. What he’s saving on IFTA taxes probably covers the reefer fuel added expense.

Unless they have an off road diesel pump, you are still paying fuel taxes. Off road diesel is exempt. What ever the states diesel fuel tax is, off road should be exactly that amount less, but most aren't.Arctic_fox and Concorde Thank this.

Yes you’re correct..However one could easily turn a 5mpg truck into a 12mpg one, saving a bunch on ifta.

Dangerous but you can

The off road fuel has a red dye in it, and costs quite a bit if you get caught using it for driving down the road. I have heard $2500.00 penalty from the IRS for avoiding taxes.

Much fuel is wasted when folks require continuous running vs. start/stop on loads that do fine on start stop.
Snailexpress Thanks this.
