Honestly though listening to the driver ( unless he is lying ) the 5th wheel might be bad or out of adjustment. Seems like he really knew what he was talking about and was honest about the entire situation when Ron rolled up...
Flat Earth Trucker and 4mer trucker Thank this. -
It’s plausible, had the jaws disengage on me once pulling a Walmart trailer-head of the trailer slammed down on the rear of the chassis, which saved the landing gear and the reefer fuel tank from any damage. Turned out the adjustment bolt on the fifth wheel had popped out!
The previous time it happened to me on a different tractor there was sludge buildup in the fifth wheel, and this was after the tractor had undergone a safety inspection!ducnut and Flat Earth Trucker Thank this. -
Ill give the benefit of the doubt. When i first got my truck someone had improperly repaired it in the past and my 5th wheel broke off the truck. So i can easily see a shoddy repair or ware causeing a failure

IDK, just hooked up....
Add in that if they're not hooked good the fist turn is where they usually come off -
My only issue is that at 14:27 of the video, the jaw is in place and there appears to be a circular mark, possibly from the kingpin, on top of the jaw. I'm skeptical about the driver's version of the event. I'm not saying he is lying, he may very well believe what he is saying is the way it unfolded, even if that isn't what really happened.

When i was with Schneider my fifth wheel didn't engage. Lucky I check the jaw. Turn out fifth wheel grease was jamming up the lock and had to scrap it off the center.
