Portland couple, both Nike execs, die after lumber on passing truck strikes them during California bicycle ride (nypost.com)
Christian and Michelle Deaton had been biking down the Silverado Trail on the outskirts of Napa at about 11 a.m. Tuesday when a flatbed truck tried to go around them at about 40 mph, according to The Oregonian.
At some point, lumber stacked in the bed of the 2018 Freightliner shifted so part of the wood hung over the end of the truck — and it struck the Deatons, the newspaper said.

When you don’t secure the load and don’t ever check your mirror to see the lumber hanging off the passenger side of the truck.

I will give Roehl some credit, when I did flatbed training with them they impressed upon me how good of an idea was to double secure everything on a trailer and I've actually seen incidents where trailers roll over and the load is still 100% secure.
It's scary because I see trailers on the road everyday with suspect securement and I just thinking in my mind what I would do to secure that load better. It happens too often and as I'm driving I even find myself in a hurry to get around some of these trailers so I don't become a victim and a statistic. -

This is sad news. I read another article about it from Fox says at the end "The cause of the collision remains under investigation.", seems pretty clear what the cause was. A driver that was clueless as to what his load was doing.
