An owner operator with their own authority

    Hey guys! First time poster, long-time trucking guy.

    As an asset-based carrier, we are accepting owner operators to drive for our company based in NJ. One of the things that came across my path was an owner who has their new authority but wants to run under our authority while theirs matures. How does this usually work? Is there a way for them to keep to their insurance while running under our authority? Is there any other stipulations I should be made of aware of before I bring him on?

    Anyone can pay the premium for policies an Insurance company will sell.
    Him keeping insurance while he works under your policy and authority should be ok.

    Some insurance companies don't like the shared liability he would have as the driver/truck owner.
    Just talk to your agent and verify.

    I wouldn’t.

    Get into a lot of headaches.
    If something happens it’ll be in your insurance, he leaves goes to his which is sitting idle paying 750k minimum and that’s it.

    But it’s up to you, I’d call.
