I agree, why is it Kenworth6969, that we just can't convince these people what a great buy a KWhopper is, and always will be. Nothing wrong with the trucks you mention, except one, resale. The "generic" trucks will always be around, megas replace them regularly, but most of the "generic" trucks are from fleets, and have a speckled history. After 4 years, they are toast. New is a different thing, but KW owners generally respected their trucks, and has been an O/Os choice for over 60 years, and I never drove a KW I didn't like.
Buying my first truck, need help choosing 1of these 3 trucks

The second truck is blue and has Thermo King APU and Detroit transmission. Eaton automatic transmission had trouble in pass unless it’s the new one that can communicate with the ISX engine.
The Detroit One Box(emissions box) is one piece box and the DOC filters can’t be replaced. You have buy a rebuilt emissions box from Detroit. The platinum wears out or is all used up. They go bad about 600,000 -700,000miles and are about $13,000 to replace.
I had my own truck many years ago and figured I could out run or stay in business by running miles and not going home if needed. My fist truck was 2000 Volvo with Detroit S60. I ran that truck from 450,000 to 1,400,000 then got used 2011 truck. That truck broke then bank with all the repairs and downtime. You might be surprised just how cheap freight rates are.
my current company say they been losing money now for like 4 quarters. Not a lot but we have guaranteed minimum pay every weeks. So the company has to pay drivers even if they don’t make profit. They make lots of money when the rates were crazy higher last couple years. So they must have some extra.blairandgretchen and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Let me add to my post about replacing the DOC and DPF. The prices for the 2 came to around $9500.00 for parts and tax alone from the stealership. The company that installed them and did an emissions tune up added 1 hour for labor when it should’ve been like 3 hours. Also, they didn’t mark up the parts. So in reality, the cost to replace the system and labor could’ve been around $12k, probably even more if the Stealership would’ve done the work.

So would you think that a taller ratio (say like 2.69, 2.79, or 2.85) would be better for the flats with less of 'turning the engine wide open" with the drawback of some semislow hill climbing? I don't mind having to put on the 4ways going up hill because as a company driver I was used to it. Going 35 to 40 uphill has always been normal for me ( unless I was hauling NAPA to SLC- VERY LIGHT!) and i am trying to search out a truck that is comparable to one my company used. Basically I would rather have a fat wallet than be the fastest up the hill on my way to the next fuel stop to refuel from pulling 80k up the hill at 60mph. My company truck was a cascadia with the 12 auto trans, Dd15 and 22.5 low pro tires and it usually got 7.7mpg and sometimes 7.9.Sadly my company bought basically what was available so specs were all over the place so contacting them was no help. The only commonality was no matter the truck we were governed at 69 with passsmart to 74. The mpg was about the same too no matter what truck it was. Also ANY knowledgeable person is welcome to answer this question.... Please and thank you!Last edited: Apr 4, 2024

Those ratios will go, but truck will fall on its face on a mountain. You’ll be the one in right lane with flashers on doing 25 while trucks fly by like theyre empty.Sirscrapntruckalot and AtomicSpud Thank this.

Personally i like a Cat engine, But my KW has the ISX cummins, have had good service, Got a DD15, it’s good too, but cummins will run and hide from it.
But fuel mileage the detroit is 7.3 vs Cummins 6.1 on same run, loaded same.AtomicSpud Thanks this. -
No one will convince me the rear end ratio makes the difference going over a mountain. Say you have two identical trucks, but one has 3.08, other has 3.55. All you’re gonna do is drop a gear lower in the truck with the 3.08. And still climb at the same speed.
And the closer you get to a 1 to 1 ratio in the rear end, the more efficient you get. -
So maybe something that splits the middle.. Say a 3.09 ratio? Mind you any truck I buy WILL have an automatic transmission due to accessibility issues.Last edited: Apr 4, 2024
