Years ago I worked with a guy who told stories about his former life as a police officer when we all stood outside during smoke breaks. Sometimes he would mention his ex with obvious bitterness. We could tell he missed being a cop. His drinking problem was pretty obvious too, but he was a senior manager type who was buddies with the CEO, and it was OK since we didn't have to report to him anyway.

One of the women who was there a lot apparently paid closer attention than I did, and got curious about what she said was a five year gap in his stories. She did some digging and found old news reports of how he had walked in on his wife with another man, pulled his gun and killed the guy. He did five years in prison; crime of passion and a good cop otherwise so he got off light.

The moral of the story is, don't tell stories about your old life in front of women on your smoke breaks. They'll end up checking up on you.
