Most grain haulers with “real” trucks aren’t at 78-79k. They’re 90k-100k plus. And with those trucks slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

One of my first loads with this truck was 108k and 15’ wide. It pulled it just fine. I have a 500hp paccar vs most of the rest of the fleet having a 450 paccar. This trucks pulls just about the same as my last truck that had a 500 hp cummins and an 18 sp manual. The paccar is a lot quieter and much better on fuel.

Do you have parvo wulfman?
-
Weren't the 1st group of the new mid-roof trucks spec'd differently than the rest?
I think this Volvo is a 460/1650. I know this sweedish dog w/13 a speed doesn't start fast on the low side, but once I am on the high side of the box it picks up speed faster, until I have to shift out of 11th, then 11th and 12th have the same top speed so unless I am above 75k lbs, I don't even bother with 12th, I go from wound out in 11th right straight to 13th.Last edited: Jul 7, 2024

Yes there were 5 wing team trucks ordered with 500 hp paccars and 5’ fifth wheel slides. I think only two of the five are actually with wing team guys now. One retired, one quit to go local, and one went to a senior driver on the cowling crew.dwells40 and supersnackbar Thank this.

Wasn't that many years ago a 350 Cummins was big power

The way they have re-castrated my Volvo, it pulls slightly better than the 1st truck I bought years ago with an 11.1 350 hp Series 60 and a 9 speed. I had it uprated to a 375, which only helped me burn more fuel.dwells40, cdavis188, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this.

I had one of those! 11.1 Series 60, an old Crete Volvo White.GMC. Mine was uprated to 365HP, they told me that was the max.cdavis188 Thanks this.

Your right, it was a 365...it's been 20 years since I had it. Mine was in an old FLD with a 42" flat top. Looked a lot like the mini-sleepers that the megas like Prime, F&S and USX use for regional trucks.
I don't remember if that extra uprate added much to the torque though, especially connected to a 9 speed.Lonesome Thanks this. -
I can't imagine these big trucks. I was so happy to drive my 285 hp Maxidyne 300 I smiled like a Cheshire cat. When I went to a OTR produce company and they gave me the keys to a Western Star CO with a KT450, 13 spd od and 410 rears I thought I had died and gone heaven.dwells40, Oxbow, IH Truck Guy and 3 others Thank this.
