Idling at night

Well after 21 months my predator 2,000 went stupid last night so I replaced it today.

Stopped by harber freight and walked out to door with this in about 20min...

Net cost to replace it was $139 for a new 2yr warranty.

 

I still like my pulsar.

Same size and weight. Twice the power. And rv hookup.

 

I've been doing some runs for the first time in almost a decade, and the first time I used the EPU in the new Kenworth. I can't really think of a better way to skin a cat. Turned it on at night when temps were still in the 80's, AC came on, bunk cooled off, I went to sleep. Woke up at six, temps outside were forties, and the bunk heater was running. Cab still 67 degrees. My old carcass about as well rested as it ever gets. All without noise, fumes, hauling fuel, or changing oil or filters. Worth the price of admission, IMNSHO.

Before anyone asks, no, it won't work for a 34 in Phoenix, in July.

 

I’ve done both - ex fleet truck with a gas generator and portable AC unit, then I bought the big bunk with the 7500 Quiet Diesel Onan.

If I had my time again, I would have halved the passenger side fuel tank on the ex fleet truck and installed the QD. Yes, it’s $13k for the unit.

But, it powers space heaters, engine block heater and 110AC appliances, and tends battery and inverter in Winter -

And roof top AC and appliances in the summer.

If you’re truly 48 states and year round OTR, I think it’s the better option. Think ‘year round’.

Harkens me back to when I would walk into a Flying hook at 6pm, middle of summer - the TV room was full of drivers . Why? Just waiting till the sun went down.

I have only pulled platform for 10 years, but quickly realized that the big bunk purchase with shower/toilet generator, etc. - was the best option.

Parked at an independent TS, just had a shower after tarp job in the heat today - AC running with 90 degrees outside, heat up home cooked frozen dinner, go to bed.

I don’t work much, but add up the savings of it all, and I think you’ll find the cost of the Onan bleeds out over 5 years or so.

On the bosses dime when I started - heck, run the truck all night. Not my problem. Buy a truck? Things change.

I use the ZERO BREEZE Mark 2 AC. It’s a small portable ac unit and I have two batteries. Each battery lasts about 4 hours in warm weather and longer if it’s cool outside. It’s been great and I do recommend it. It did cost me $1,800, but I’m on a monthly payment plan. There is a good review by “Cash is King Trucking” on YouTube. I didn’t want to spend $15K on a TK APU and then have to worry about two diesel engines.
