I have a 97 Bus with a Series 60 470 HP it has around 160K miles We have had it for 8 years.I do all of my own maintenance and repair. My dad had a old bus also it had the 8v 2 stroke engine. Dad always used Delo 400 15w 40w SDE , So I've always used the same, A couple of years ago the SDE was ended and it became a blend Delo 400 15w 40w XLE syn blend, A couple of years I changed over to the XLE. We have not been using the bus much this last year because of Me! I had a heart bypass, So now in 25 were ready to go. I changed my oil and they were out of the XLE blend so I got the Delo 400 15w 40w XSP full Synthetic. I called the Chevron tech before I changed oil and they said the engine would love that oil better lube better heat transfer all around better. We just got back from a 1300 mile trip and all was good. I'm a worrier and that's why I'm here, I wanted to ask you guys or gals about what you think. I'm on a bus forum and I don't want to post this question there, because everyone has an opinion, You guys know these engines.

Everyone here has an opinion too! I am a CAT man, I buy exclusively Shell Rotella 15W40. My brother runs a Series 60 14L, he won’t buy anything but Mobil Delvac, because that’s what his mechanic recommendedIamoverit and Rideandrepair Thank this.

It's already in there, so it is what it is.
There's nothing wrong with that oil, and no more than you drive it, it'll never be an issue.
But, I don't like changing oil brand or type personally unless major work has been done.
Keep running and worry about other things.Bean Jr., Rideandrepair and Sons Hero Thank this. -
Thanks' Well that's why I stayed with Delo, same weight seems like everything is going Synthetic, A lot of my friends say get a trailer or 5th wheel ! I like my old bus, It has always been good, I'm not ready to give up yet on it,I love that series 60 engine. When I 1st bought it I did take it to a Detroit repair shop and had valves adjusted and checked out, sense then it has been me on maintenance

Delo is a good oil, not going to go wrong with using that.
I'm a rotella fan myself, buddy of mine swears by delo.
Both quality oils. Pour it in and enjoy the ride!Bean Jr. and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I've got a 1995 S60 in a Pete 379, I run Schaeffers 15/40 7000 Semi Synthetic, it's expensive but I get it delivered and I use their oil testing service and lubes too.
I've used Rotella in it after an oil cooler leak on the road, and haven't noticed any difference. Any 15-40 synthetic or blend should be fine.
Some guys have said that they noticed more consumption with different brands, and switched.
Is that an 11.1 liter S60 or the 12.7? Just curious.Rideandrepair, Sons Hero and Albertaflatbed Thank this. -
Typically Cats use Rotella. Detroits Mobil Delvac. That’s most common practice. Why? IDK. But that’s what I’ve done. Detroit used to have a sticker on the valve cover suggesting Delo. I’m sure it’s a marketing deal. But still, probably makes about the best argument to use Delo. It’s all refined at McKees Rocks Pa refinery. Other refineries also, I’d imagine. I walked through the refinery. They had every brand name imaginable. Including Honda, Ford, Toyota. It’s all the same oil. Just different additives.

I did not know that Thanks

I got fresh 60Series motor in company truck 2 weeks ago and been told and supplied with 10W30..never used anything but 15/40 previously, but not my truck not my problem. The original engine developed issues at 870,000 Km and was covered by warranty
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Alot of the new engines use 10w30 it seems, I had a 2020 Kwt880 with a Cummins x15, used 10w30.
My current volvo with 500hp d13 uses 10w30 also.
It's strange as I always think 15w40 ot 5w40 for diesels
