CdL two questions

1 Just go to regular dmv shouldn't be a issue to change address.

2 Ask when you get address changed but should be 1 month before expiration. So you can't renew before May 1. No test unless your hazmat is expiring.

Don't think you will get renewal letter unless your company sends one. My company sends one for expiring license. But we get no notice of expiring hazmat.

 

Nevada required me to go to a CDL only office, I tried to go to a regular office but she laughed at me. Illinois it was any office that had CDL services, which was about half of them. Depends on your state, it’s rules, which rules they choose to follow that day, your DMV person, if they are in a good or bad mood when you walk in, if they like you, if they’re bored, if they feel like doing their job. Every state is different.

 

The CDL is a federal program administered by the individual states.

This was an issue with New Jersey as the Motor Vehicle 'agencies' scattered throughout the state were not state employees as the agencies are political and the agency holder hires the personnel.

The feds made an exception for NJ to allow the testing to be performed by non-state personnel and CDL licenses to be issued by an 'agency'.

For the same reasons, the NJ IFTA and IRP are only available at the Trenton office, originally inside the headquarters on the 5th floor until they decided to move them to an unused area inside the nearby Trenton 'agency' where some of the headquarters staff now work.

The move was partially caused by us 'riff raff' ogling the good looking staff.

Basically each state had to meet federal expectations however they could so every place has some sort of different twist.

I understand that, Feds passed the buck after making the laws leaving the state to devise their own often confusing methods that make things hardest on you the customer after they made you 'the customer'...LOL

 

I guess each state is different. I've had my CDL for 30 years and this is the first time I've heard of a CDL DMV. My state has full-service DMVs and some outstations which are just small offices with electronic kiosks and an employee or two. The kiosks do the common things 4-wheelers commonly do.

If you don't have an expiring HazMat endorsement you never have to take anymore endorsement tests. HazMat is the only endorsement that expires.

 

I think my state notifies you by mail 60-90 days before your license expires, IIRC. If there is no HazMat being renewed, you just show up, fill out the form, take a new picture, MAYBE take a new eye test, pay and leave with a paper copy of your new CDL and receive a plastic CDL in the mail, in my state.

 

You can update your address at a regular DMV, no need to go to a CDL-specific one, just double-check with them. You’ll get your renewal letter about a month before June. If you need to take any tests, it's best to start studying now. You can renew your CDL and change your address at the same time if it’s easier for you."
