Leased on O/O - Georgia

    Hey guys and gals, I have 3 questions.

    For those of you leased on to Landstar, Mercer, Bennett or any other company who hires O/OP’s

    1. Is there any kind of insurance for the truck I would need to get even though I’m going to run under their authority?

    2. Do any of you run local as O/O, and if so which would be a good company to look at?

    3. Do they have load boards for local, or are you scheduled?

    I know the big money is typically OTR, but I’m not looking to get rich, as long as I can take care of my day cab and pay the very few monthly bills I have I’ll be good. For me it’s being able to control my time.

    Local, good luck, reginal most likely, try j b hunt
    Their load boards or dat, free load boards. Truck smarter direct......

    I'm leased onto Landstar with 2 platform specialized trailers.

    You can keep your own physical damage insurance, they don't care. Their insurance provider is Gallagher, and I saved about 40% sourcing my own underwritten by Great West.

    Cargo and liability is covered, you almost have to use Gallagher for the bobtail/unladen, they have a strict set of parameters that most won't honor. It is $31 a week.

    I'm in MO which requires work comp - that's $33/week. Not sure about GA, if it applies in your state.

    LS has 7500 trucks, 5,000 of which are van pullers. 65% of linehaul to your tractor, 7% to your trailer if it's yours - or you can pull one of theirs. 100% of FSC. Mercer has a lesser truck count. Bennett is focused more on government/defense/AA&E - and teams, and about 2500 trucks.

    LS has an internal load board, and I would have to know your trailer type and area, but I'd guess that given your requirements, you'd probably do OK on filling out a week with a few short hops, motel nights when you have to. The bigger REVENUE may be OTR, but not necessarily the most profitable.

    LS load board is 70% filled with double posted junk from agents outside the US - but when you do find actual agents, and do a good job for them, you can fall into steady work that just relies on you to cover their needs. LS still has a lot of 'specialized' customers - but you won't see them posted on the board often.

    In the Georgia area, or van freight, or just Landstar?

    Are you leased on there or at one of the others the OP asked about?

    Great information, thank you. My first choice was definitely going to be LS, but that’s just because I have a buddy who’s been with them for about 3 years and he’s happy. Still like to get input from other drivers if possible. I hear a lot about the agent side of things being really frustrating. How do you go about weeding out the bs agents? Is there anything in particular I should look for? I’m looking to find agents who specialize in pharma, to me it’s been the best and most enjoyable as far as specialized freight.

    As far as trailer, I was going to lease outside of LS if it’s cheaper. It appears LS has pretty decent trailers, but very few refrigerated. At this time I’m looking for a good refrigerated trailer, if possible dual temp.

    Ehhh - they don't have a lot of reefer freight, you'd be best to approach your buddy and have him do an in-depth lane match and load search by trailer type to see what does ship.

    Lane match reveals what is not posted on the board, in past tense, but has enough details to allow you to solicit the agents with your equipment type.

    The other questions - it's a longer conversation.

    An acquaintance down the road from me used to run his own reefer with them - he did OK but had come from a company job and had a mentality that matched, if that makes sense.
