Who feels like helping the special needs guy? 02 Pete 379
Headlight switch failed. The spade connector for the power out on the switch is loose and wont make contact for my headlights to come on. Can't ger a switch till morning, but in my infinite wisdom of pulling the 4 wires off (the black plastic connector they go into is M.I.A.) I somehow forgot which one is which. I have black, brown, red and...green.
Crappy pic below:
Edit: Normally I would use my volt meter to figure it out, but I also left the house this morning with all my road tools still in my Excursion. So atleast I got that going for meLast edited: Mar 11, 2026

298 is hot
239 is ground
24 is power to the headlight relay (left and right) (kick panel fuse box)
B8 goes to the marker light relay (kick panel fuse box)
This is from a pre 94 schematic, but I'm guessing it'll be the same setup.Last edited: Mar 11, 2026

Unfortunately the current logic is that if they let the current hand bumble through hauling stuff himself on equipment not suitable for the task at hand at least it keeps him busy so they don't have to come up with more work to entertain him. Profitablity isn't even on the radar.

Here is your year, I think. Same as the screenshot I grabbed too.
For some reason I'm thinking Black and brown are headlight and Clearance light feeds, leaves Red and Green as a toss up for power/ground?
Test light would at least give you power and ground, and I don't think you'll hurt the relays if you switched Clearance /headlamp on a 50/50 shot. ?
(P.S. NOT A MECHANIC), but @sawmill armed me with enough to be dangerous in this field. He did not however, increase my fire risk coverage on the insurance policy.JolliRoger, cke, The_vett and 6 others Thank this. -
I don't really have a good reason to bid on this but I'm not letting it stop me -
Best I could find in the Public domain aspect is as follows:
Black - Low Beam PositiveThe second black, I'm having to guess goes to the Marker lights, but don't quote me, as I can't rely on the information I was able to find, and I'm sorry, but I don't own manuals and couldn't find with the amount of time I searched, for a Switch Plug wiring diagram. Everything shows either just the guage. I got this from a French page, where the pictures were in English print.
Red - High Beam Positive
Green - Negative
My assumption, is that the wiring continues up to the in dash switch, the part you're holding, as I saw a picture of that at 4 State, but no indication of which color/wire goes where, so take this with a grain of salt.

Thanks guys. The red and green wires are larger, obviously to carry more current. The black and brown wires are smaller, making me think black is a ground and brown runs over to the clearance lights because there is a brown on it as well.
I popped 1 fuse and said nope to messing around any more on it. I'll grab a switch and test light tomorrow.cke, The_vett, jamespmack and 6 others Thank this. -
I have to agree according to the schematics as I followed them, 239 probably is ground. My thoughts are that these lights that I have a pic of are LED and if you don't have LED, then, yeah that would change the possible color scheme. The problem is that unless there is a diagram of the switch, everything here is guess work, so sorry we couldn't do better.
@blairandgretchen , I am a mechanic, but without a detailed schematic and pictures, it's either guess work or troubleshooting with meter...and neither one of us is there to do it.
