I mentioned the same thing and this driver pretty much got offended. I've never known a company to leave a driver stranded like that and if Swift allowed them to be left for three days on the side of the road, the FMCSA would consider that a driver safety issue.

I'm with you totally. Its the first time ive ever heard of a truck getting towed for running out of fuel. I can't imagine that Swift would hang him out to dry either. Through experience and wisdom, I can say it's ill-advised to leave the truck stop if you're fuel is low. I do think there are missing pieces to the story. I don't believe dispatch would tell a driver to continue driving. If a company did that to me, I'd want it in writing so that I could forward it to Safety and any higher management. Like I said, that is a driver safety issue and Swift could've very well paid a steep price for that. If this driver wants to get pissy because other drivers on this forum know better, then that's their prerogative. I just shared my experience like you did. I know from experience that a company can do a manual authorization at any truck stop that they don't use. This driver getting pissy just makes their story reek of ######## more than ever from my observation.

It is a little fishy. I suspect there are missing details. If he wants to stick to that story, I will certainly let him. A lot of drivers say their DAC got messed up by the company. I'm often times skeptical of that. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen inadvertently. I just fail to see what a company as large as Swift has to gain from deliberately messing up a driver's DAC. I also know truck drivers as well, and in my experience, they're not the most accountable bunch. They never think they're the issue. An accident, drug/alcohol use, things of that nature I expect them to put on a DAC. I'm starting to wonder if there was an accident.Voodoo Pyg, Lonesome and navypoppop Thank this.

So did they tow the truck because of a mechanical issuer, or that you ran out of fuel? Why in the hell would you tow a truck when you can simply prime and refuel it? This story makes no sense.

Almost every company will authorize buying fuel outside of network since is it's about 10% of what a service truck call will cost. I agree, something isn't making sense.
I suspect someone was trying to teach the company a lesson, and the company taught him a lesson by letting him sit for 3 days and with a DAC entry. You don't win arguments with the company, too often. All of the facts have to be on your side and the company has to have no way to retaliate or the driver will lose. The Motor Vehicle Record MVR in the US isn't going to record things like minor vehicle damage on private property, unable to meet appointments, gross violations of company policies, etc. Drivers and companies should all operate like everything will be known by their worst enemy. Some companies and drivers learn how the system works and tries to take advantage. I'm Scottish so I understand the desire to "burn down a castle" to make a point. Snow covered ground also disguises what is hard ground a passing motorist can park on and what is soft/wet ground they can't park on. I speak as someone that needed a tow truck after guessing wrong what was under the snow.
I guess what I am talking about is after 1 day, sitting in the truck almost hiding from passing motorists, you might reconsider your plan. Or after not doing so you kind of lose the right to complain that strangers driving past you didn't do enough for you. It's easy to be all inside your own head and not see things from others' point of view, or to think the world exists to take care of oneself and not the other 8 billion other things that need taking care of.
I wonder what you might do differently if you were running out of fuel and working for a different company? I hope you can get things fixed and get back to work, but I also hope you learn the right lesson when things go wrong. It helps avoiding other problems next time. Sometimes the company with a thousand trucks and in business for decades MIGHT know better how to do something, not always of course.Lonesome Thanks this.
