Goodluck. Here in California, I was quoted around $1600 a month for a HMO. I just finished applying for my Medical thru social security, I’m turning 65 in May, $208 a month.

Oh, yeah - I could go on about this topic.
I know a guy that can sort you out - we dropped it 2 years ago at $11k/ year, not sure what it is now.
Catastrophic is $6,500/year for us - considering it.
50 and 55.Rideandrepair, OliverCallenderIII and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -
Same. There are no affordable options, only as you say "catastrophic" options.
I wouldn't mind 11k$ a year, even probably up to 20-22k$ if it had good coverage, but it doesn't.
I'm 48, wife is 44. Last I looked 2 years ago? I think. The wife and I would spend 20k+$, and that was with 10k$ deductibles. It's insane.
We've gone without it for 14 years now, just paying OOP for everything.Rideandrepair, blairandgretchen and Diesel Dave Thank this. -

You're going to need to make enough with this company to spend (depending on age) 30k$ a year for insurance and deductibles.
Or have enough write offs that you show 30k$ a year income.Rideandrepair, blairandgretchen and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
No skin in the game just what the little bit I know.

I see $486.50 / week for single + spouse. Yeah that is expensive but don't know other options. As a company driver I am paying 40.25 for single.

What's more insane are the actual bills if something happens. I had no health problems and still don't. In December I had a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). Day 1 in the ICU was 52k. I never saw the charges for the rest of my 1 week stay. 15 minute helicopter ride from one hospital to another was 55k. It was 11 pm at night. I estimated if they had transported me by ground and not waited for the helo I would have been there about 1.5 hrs faster as the drive is only about 20-25 minutes. Hospitalization insurance does not cover the helicopter nor the 18k in various doctor charges for the week. Not sure at this point how far they are going to go in trying to collect.Rideandrepair, blairandgretchen, OlegMel and 1 other person Thank this.

Wow. Glad you got that caught and hopefully handled, and hope you have insurance.
My mom has been in and out of the hospital and rehab facilities for two months almost due to a stroke.
Luckily, she's well insured. She also took a helicopter ride, to the tune of 86k$. Her hospital and rehab bills are just starting to roll in, and we're near a half a million dollars deep already.
I'm just gonna keep investing the money, and hope that good health sees the wife and I into the future.
There's lots of folks like me. If a treatable illness or disease hits you, but would leave you broke, they'll not spend their entire savings and risk their spouses future.Rideandrepair, blairandgretchen and JB7 Thank this. -
Yup best quote i got was $1500 a month and that crap was basically good for giving me a getwell card made of toilet paper and crayon.....with a $500 bill for said card. 35k duductible. Even catastropic wanted $1400 a month and had a list literally 1000 items long of stuff it would NOT cover and even then wouldnt kick in till i hit 60k and didnt cover more then 50% till i hit 120k.
Honestly at this point i just got an HSA and now just put the cash into that. If im going to still be left holding most of the bill even after dumping tens of thousands into insurance. Then screw it ill just put those tens of thousands aside myself. Usually i hit the yearly cap in my first quarter and then just put $150 in every week in addition. And i replace anything i use asap.
Dont get the tax break on all of it sure. but you would be suprised how fast 10k a year can add up and most places have a cash price that is a lot lower then the insurance price. And frankly what ive found is that paying cash USUALLY for most day to day items ends up costing less then when covered by insurance. And if i ever end up in a situation where i have hundreds of thousands in medical bills.
Well then ill cross that bridge when i get to it. because honestly with what most insurances i can even GET will cover anyway. Im STILL going to be out hundreds of thousands, since most have clauses they can drop you for certain medical conditions or injurys and cover nothing anyway. But theh still get to keep your duductible to that point if you read the fine print.Big Road Skateboard Thanks this.
