I have an ISX 15 CM871. After a day of running, the next morning I will have to prime the truck several times to get it to fire, sometimes wont fire unless a small small ether shot.
Sounds like the lift pump is pulled air when it primes. Fuel lines look good and no visible leaks.
Could it be the lift pump itself or the check valve in the lift pump?

A fuel line sucking air doesn't often show a visible leak. It's not under pressure
LivingstonTruckingLLC Thanks this. -
okay, thank you.
How would someone go about testing to see if its that or the pump/check valve?
New Owner/Op and learning. Sorry if this is a dumb question. -
What I do, is bypass all the fuel lines from the tank, all the way to the pump, if possible.
If not, go to the nearest connection to the pump. I'll then install a line from the pump or nearest connection, and drop the other end into the fuel tank. Just take the fuel cap off the tank and put the hose in. If it tries to curl in the tank, attach the hose to a tire bar or winch bar with zip ties, then drop it in the tank.
Prime the system, get it running and let run for 20-30 minutes. Then shut it off and let it set.is this the one they put a starter on?
Did they have to move any fuel lines? Or remove a filter, or filter base? -
Yes thats me.
Had them look at it, they claimed its nothing they did. -
I have tried priming the truck. Ran the lift pump 5 full 2 min cycles. I do have fuel squirting from the compucheck on the isfm beside the gear pump.
Even after that, wont start. It'll act like it wants to try a few times but wont. Hit it with a small small ether shot, fired up. Ran rough for maybe 2 minutes and cleared up and runs fine. No smoke from exhaust or diesel smell.
Rawze says when the gear pump goes bad it can cause hard starting issues on the cm871 but once it fires its fine.
Can run all day no power loss no codes etc. Shut the truck for 30 mins lunch fires right up. Only an issue after overnight sitting. -
It's losing prime. I'd be looking at fuel lines around the starter because that's when it started, and always the most likely spot of failure is in the general area where someone worked.
Maybe somebody has an ISX specific way to check it, but what I mentioned works.BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -
Okay man! thanks so much for the help.
But yes the KW dealer I took it to looked and claimed its nothing they did. But yes, was NOT as an issue until they got in there.
Again I am new and learning as much as I can. My local shop was 3 weeks out at the time, so once they are available I'll have them look at it. -
When changing fuel filters at oil change (dry, not pre filled) and cycling the lift pump 4-5 times, it can take 30 seconds or more for the engine to catch with running the starter continuous. You wrote take maybe 2 minutes to clear up. With a known good system, the air will purge in less than 1/2 minute and idle will smooth out. After shut off with a 10 minute wait to check oil level the next start can still be hesitant and need a moment to clear air in the system. Try timing the actual time from ether start to smooth idling. (Is it really 2 minutes?)
LivingstonTruckingLLC Thanks this. -
Have you recently changed fuel filters…?
On my isx cummins I guess I got a bad filter once. Was ok for a few hours, but over night. You had to prime/ether it.LivingstonTruckingLLC and dosgatos Thank this.
