I am not a truck driver, but I have been researching this industry in hopes of gaining as much insight as possible before applying to a CDL school.

First off, I understand the reasoning for driver-facing cameras, and from what I've read, they're becoming common for all major carriers. Personally, I think this is another step towards mass surveillance, and it's not something I am in support of.

I'd like to gather more insights from drivers on this forum as to what the protocols are regarding the use of these cameras.

Are they only required to be on and running with no obstruction when you are driving? I understand there are certain statuses a driver marks themselves in, such as personal conveyance when you need to make a personal errand when out of DOT time; do they need to be recording you then?

Are the cameras common in smaller fleets, such as agricultural or farming businesses?
Thanks in advance for the responses.

Not all large companies use the cameras.
I don't have a list, but that's a question you can ask before accepting a job offer.

Protocol 1 for drivers: Do NOT pick your nose while driving. Your company has a "humor reel" of all the nasal excavators which they watch for a cheap laugh from time to time.
Protocol 2: Don't sing while driving unless you have the voice. Once again, they keep clips..

    Driver-facing cameras? o_O

You don't say where you approx location is (& that ALONE can make a BIG difference) -- but cameras are hardly everything you need to be researching...before making a decision to pursue a career in trucking.

    Among still other factors:
    • Big-rig parking between shifts -- is easily one of the more challenging problems drivers face daily (especially east of the Mississippi River) -- in my own personal experience...that will pose a bigger headache for you than any camera (this assumes you are in fact a reasonably good driver).
    • Proper levels/amounts of training -- before going solo with your own assigned tractor. This depends on just how careful you are with your choice of a first (trainer) carrier. WARNING: ONE WEEK OUT ON A TRAINER'S TRUCK -- DOES NOT A DRIVER MAKE (look for at least 3 weeks -- many starter fleets offer even more than that)!!!
    • Generally speaking -- dry van freight will offer you the easiest, flattest learning curve into the world of class-A big rigs; with that said -- ask drivers in fleets of interest how long they are waiting between one load, to the next (& why).
    • Don't sign on with a reefer fleet -- unless they offer training on how they want you to use a DOT-compliant "split sleeper" clock feature (allows you to extend your DOT run time, depending on circumstances) -- & also, how they allow you to use "PC"...or "personal conveyance".
    Best of luck ....

Put a bobblehead doll in front of the camera, then do whatever you want to.

Wonder if the company will provide you surveillance of their office? Fair is fair.

Moon the camera that’ll make them not watch it ever. If your well hung hold a sign that says if they use the video you charge x amount to use the rights. Or put a naked pic of Beulah ball breaker in front of it. Once again they’ll think twice before looking at it. lol

I recon wear a balaclava. If its good enough for the police to hide their face for identity and safety reasons, its good enough for little ol truck driver. Inevitably insurance companies will be asking the insured for data on staff, so the insured can get ? level of insurance. Cross referencing that via face recognition and applying it to personal health, contents, and vehicles insurance is probably hear now. Employers already share/access data compiled on staff for employment reasons. Its worth money to the people who trade it and nothing is offered to the ones its taken from.

Or at the very least wear a storm trooper party mask for the staff in the office to share on facebook.
