Since this is an airplane thread, did you see what happened in Denver? Plane bound for L.A. at 11;15 PM, hit a person walking on the runway, and filtered them through the engine,,I bet the person in 13F got a sight they won't forget any time soon,,:puke:

You must not remember when part of the Stapleton Airport runway was a bridge over I-70 in Denver. Still not a reason to blow a billion dollars on the new airport, but it was fun both to fly into and out of there and to drive the highway when planes were crossing. I flew in and out of there to Albuquerque for work several times just before DIA opened. Every time we wondered if we were going to land at the new airport or the old one -- old one every time. Was around '94 or '95.

Unfortunately Stapleton Airport’s replacement was a necessity. Its layout in particular the runways hampered its ability to handle operations, especially during bad weather. The runways were built too close together.
The construction at Denver International Airport alleviated that issue.
When Stapleton closed it was torn up and turned into a residential neighborhood. Initially the neighborhood was named after the old airport, but the Denver city council quickly changed the name to Central Park.

It turned out that the neighborhood and the former airport’s namesake,Benjamin Franklin Stapleton was a card carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan!

DIA was sold as a safer alternative to Stapleton, but its location is actually worse for wind shear and precipitation than Stapleton. And the $500 million automated baggage system that delayed the opening for months and then was unceremoniously scrapped was basically only good for getting Feddy Peña the job as Clinton's Transportation Secretary.

As for the rumors about secret tunnels and demon worship etc beneath DIA, all I will say is that once when the missus was working there as a ground coordinator for one of the airlines, she accidentally ended up down in a restricted area and was confronted by armed security. They let her go with a warning, but she said she was getting super creeped out before she ran into them -- was actually relieved to come across a real person even though she was sort of in trouble for being there.

I did not know that about Stapleton the man btw. Locals still call that neighborhood "Stapleton." Used to deliver to the Sam's Club and the Walmart there, and sometimes the missus and I would stop for a bite at one of the restaurants. It's kind of a yuppie neighborhood now, lots of people from outside Colorado living in those miserable condos.

Denver has always been a Democrat town founded by Yankees, and lots of Democrats were card-carrying members of the Klan. Robert Byrd is the most obvious example. The missus and I grew up in a neighborhood in a different state with the grandchildren of the people at the center of Klan activity for the tri-state area 100 years ago. She's mixed, I'm sure you can figure out how that went. She was kicked several times by the parents of her playmates when she was little, for example, and regularly beat up by bullies in school. I'm white; she was one of four black kids in our high school of 1600 white kids. The teams are still called "The Black Raiders" today (the high school was founded in the 1920s at the height of Klan power), but people either pretend not to know why or genuinely are ignorant of the history of the neighborhood. What you learn is that hiding history doesn't change the legacy. Racist ######## are going to be racist ########. It's better in a way if they're open about it instead of pretending not to be while they are. At least you don't have to guess.

I remember when DIA was still being constructed when they were testing that automated baggage system. It was supposed to revolutionize the way baggage was handled to and from aircraft. It was developed by BAE Systems. From the start it was plagued by technical problems. In numerous tests it actually ATE the baggage! Finally the powers that be gave up and had the entire system replaced by a more conventional baggage handling system, which contributed to the airport’s opening delay.

Because of the hiring boom that went on for last 5-10 years, if I was trying to get into the industry now, I would borrow the money and train, train, train, and get hired. The income of the job will support the loan payments, you may need to have roommates or live with your parents for 1 year, but financially it will work unless you fall into the "I just got hired for Big job so now I buy all the expensive life accessories for that job, house, new car, recreational toys, get a wife AND girlfriend, etc. That's what 'killed' lots of people I saw making it through the system. Your first 1-2 years in the airline pilot job, you keep living like a college student. The airlines have contracts where you will get paid for 85 hours of flying per month, no matter how little they use you. 85 X $135+ per hours = $11,400 per month income. Even if your loan is $5k per month you can live on $5-6k per month anywhere in the country.

Now hiring is slowed or stopped. Airlines, farming, oil, other industries are boom and bust with cycles. I got into a bad cycle. Airlines were hiring the college students I supervised with 750 hours, enrolled in FAA-approved college course which allows them to get hired with 1,000 hours and restricted ATP license. They would flight instruct to get to 1,000 hours, finish college (college degree no longer mandatory) and be in a training class 1 week to 1 month after hitting 1,000 hours of flight time and very very little twin time. I was so jealous I can't describe it.
