Knight wants you to idle your truck so they can cut your speed back and save even more on fuel.

When I worked at May trucking they would charge drivers money for over idling yet the Idle time was calculated as ALL idle time and not just park time. They would pay you not to idle, but it was half what they would charge you to over-idle

All the more reason for me to find somewhere else to work. I don't even care if it's an owner operator that has several trucks sitting around with his wife/her husband planning loads from the comfort of their home. As long as I get away from these crooked big companies. Especially those that have foundations in that crooked religion based out of Salt Lake.

I'm not familiar with the auxilliry power unit, wouldn't that AC drain the battery or do you have to have a 4th battery? I'm a dummy on configuration.

An APU is just that - an "auxiliary" power unit. It has it's own tiny engine that consumes its own fuel at a much slower rate than running the truck's own engine.

    MaximumTexas Thanks this.

And the APU charges the batteries and keeps the truck cool and warm and some even will keep the engine warm. Take 1 gallon of fuel to run it 8 hours and you can sleep better wth it running than the truck engine!

And you will NEVER see a Knight family owned truck with an APU until they are mandatory! They could not care any less for their employees !

Which is why they won't get my 32 years of knowledge and experience to get their cheap freight anywhere in their cheap trucks!
To all of you BFI's like this one! GET WITH THE TIMES! Time waits on no one! Want to get left behind then catch up! This line from their web site makes me want to wonder whats going to happen when the drivers decide that sleeping half way comfortably and they decide to sleep when it's dark while warm and day time when it's cold will make this a lie!
Especially when those companies decide they would rather have a company that cares about the people who are carrying their products are treated!

But I do dream at times! Still those losers couldn't pay me enough to turn a key for them! Besides they would not be able to do business everytime I drove by a terminal as the heat and A/c would take a dump for some reason! As the old saying goes whats good for geese are good for the ganders!

Knights dummies on configuration also, they remove the fourth battery and stockpile them for spares. They swear by it as your on the phone with them waiting on a jump. They no longer call roadservice for jumps because it happens so often. You get to wait until a pissed off driver comes by to give you a jump. Bring your own cables with you. I was losing a days pay a month on this non-sense. So instead of going without creature comforts like a dome light and a simple lap top, I idled the stupid thing, watched my top speed drop from 67 to 64 and used that laptop to find a new job. Most companies provide adequate equipment, miles, and an overall atmosphere that enables a good driver to succeed but not Knight. Your F'ed from day one there.

After reading this post, I got educated on APU's and now I have my doctorate in the APU technology. As part of my extensive research into trucking companies, to determine which one I will ultimately work for, I have made the APU required for me to say yes to the job. I don't want to "turn a key" for a company that doesn't have one coupled with the fact that Anti-Idling laws are popping up like for sale signs in bad neighborhoods. I love the road, will ultimately be an owner op within 2 years and will most likely have one of my own. It does piss me off that many trucking companies refuse to equip the fleet with these systems. It seems to me that the benefits of increased driver productivity, massive fuel savings & reduced emissions would far outweigh the initial investment.
