actually you can. thats why you have the split. Just remember when doing them, that your 2 hr break does NOT stop the 14 hr clock....only the 8 hr sleeper break (and the 8 must be taken in the sleeper) stops it. So when you figure where your 14 ends after taking your 2....you gotta start the 14 from your previous start.
I know how to do it, but i also run my logbook off my laptop (DDL.com) and it makes it much easier.

I am wrong, please disregard my post up there. I got a violation warning today for that very same thing the other day at a shipper, my 14 ran out and they would not let me stay there for the 10. So I hid out in the back for 2 hours and split it. They got me for over 14 violation now I have to sign a paper and take another dang log class lol. One of these days I will figure it out then they will change HOS.Injun Thanks this.

OMG, how hard is it? The rules and diesel bear say 8 hours stop the 14 hour clock.
8 hours to go split sleeper
10 hours to return to 11 driving.
scottied67 you can't start with the 2, you have to start with 8 to split.
Many just need to stay away from split sleeper because they don't understand it. It's really not that hard. The way the DOT words it is. -
Mr. Condo, it's apparently not easy to understand. You do not have to start the split with the 8 and no matter how many times you split 8-2-8-2...neither your 11 nor your 14 reset until you take a 10.
If that's what you are trying to say, please forgive my misunderstanding. You must know I respect your time and experience. Please take a peek at how DieselBear lined it out. -
Check out example 17 (Possibly others as well).

Sure you can.
The 14-hour and 11-hour clocks start from the last time you did a 10-hour break. Somewhere along the line before the 11 and 14 run out you take a 2-hour break. Later on (again before you run out of time) you take 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth. Your 11 and 14 are now counted from the end of the 2-hour break, and the 8-hour break doesn't count against your 14. However, your total line 3 time on either side of that 8-hour break (counting from the end of the 2-hour break forward) cannot exceed 11 hours. Totally clear as mud, yes?
Been doing it for some time now... DOT likes the way I log - and so does Ms Elogs. Its like logbook magic once you figure it out!!scottied67 Thanks this. -
The 8 hour sleeper period will not count towards you 14 hour window. But, the time will resume counting once you take your 8 and come bacjk out driving. I bet I have at least 5 drivers a week get this confused.
-
I will raise my hand and be one of them!

I run a team truck so we do not really do the split sleeper. We each run a 12 hour shift that way we get our 10hrs in. But, I can see where the split sleeper can get very confusing especially when you are just starting out -
You work 14 hours but only drive 8 of them. Legally you can take an 8 hour break and then drive 3 more, then a 2 hour break and then drive 8. Right??
Otherwise the split sleeper serves no purpose for a solo driver if you have to take a full 10 hours to start it. -
Yes...As long as both sides of the breaks equal 11...
