Oh my!! The horror of having to be on time for pick ups/delivery! Plus being forced to be respectful of customer's yard rules! And, then, to have to endure forced dispatch in a company truck, and only guaranteed 2 holidays at home? Were you not informed of this by your recruiter? And, by the way, you were NEVER referred to as a number, a driver ID was given to you, created by the letters from your first & last name. YOU accepted the invitation to orientation, but you obviously couldn't chew what you bit off!
-
Ok, I think the point has been made, let's not do any more jumping on the thread starter. Unless you have something helpful to contribute, please move along.

Son, They all blow. Even Maverick. If they have recruiters they suck and serve only one purpose to offer people a chance to begin a career, that's it. You need a quarter million miles (at least), a spotless record, 100% on-time (not 99.5%) delivery record, and you have to love this line of work before you can even dream of making demands.
I work for a company with 60 trucks and will never have it any other way. Long haul, round-trip, out 3-7 days. Life is good and I listened to a lot of BS to get here. I sucked it up and it's paid off, you can too. -
Well; I for one used to drive for maverick. I did not like the point system either, but it was there for everyone. Even slate across the board. As far as being late for appointments they will tell you if you can not make the drop or pick notify us and we will move the appointment. If you are too tired or sick or whatever reason do not chance it. Notify us. I can personally vouch that they will move the appointment back. I have done it a few times. It took 18 hours for me too load one time in russelville KY. Logan aluminum. Load was going to TX. No problem. Rescheduled. I also had some other times I could not make; no problem.
I did get some points. Mostly log violations. They drop in a year or you can take a safety class and remove them that way. As far as thanksgiving home. They deadheaded me 8-10 hours home for one and paid me to bounce home empty. How many companies would do that? Go home at christmas and you have the option of staying home until after new years. You can take time off at home anytime you want for extended periods if you want.
I got home one friday and had a chicago drop for monday. Found a water leak at home. Had to fix it. Called in. No problem. Sent a empty trailer to my house to swap. They told me just let us know when you are ready to roll again. I took a week off to remodel my bathroom after I had to rip the floor up. My daughter broke her leg and needed surgery. I was in dallas TX. No problem; got me home.
I used to bring home $800-1200 a week and be home almost every weekend. Maverick is one of the best companies I ever worked for. You would be hard pressed to find a better outfit. Especially if you are a new driver. Hook up with a company that keeps you out a month or two and when you are eating that cold turkey meal at the truck stop you might reflect on how good you had it.Ops85 Thanks this. -
Would someone explain to me what this "forced dispatch" thing is? If you're a company driver and they say go here is that "forced?"
I can understand being an O/O and taking the load you want but anything else it's their truck so as I've always said a mile is a mile and took what the OWNER of the truck gave me!
Why do rookies and company drivers think they have a choice and can "turn down" a load?? If you "don't like an area" go back to the job you left to become an OTR driver in someone elses equipment! A road is a road. It's made of asphalt or concrete, has lines painted on it and dumb and dumber drivers playing tag with you so whats the big deal? Can't handle the big city? BK is still hiring!
I must be getting dumb with older age and cancer and brain surgeries going on!Ops85 Thanks this. -
well its about respect and i was not the only one that said that like i said i want a job not a sentence and i have got a lot of miles under me like i said in the late 80s and 90s didnt know that things change that much that they treat people like kids i know what it takes to be a trucker like i said befor (if some of you should have read what i wrote) but i see that some of you only read what you want and just make people feel like thay are the stupid ones all i want is a job dont care about being out for two weeks i have a family i have to raise and i need money but i dont like to be treated like a dam kid im a full grown man and i need to be treated like one and a nother thing can you tell me how a big company like maverick can have a nasty place for new drivers to come stay and have bed bugs and 6 out of the 15 people staying their get chewed up and they say it aint no big deal and said just get over it got me thinking that they dont really care about the driver and you are just a number to them or letters like they do give you their im better then that trust me ive been around the block once or twice so i do know and i am going to work for someone for a couple of years and then i will become a o/o ............

well i gotta tell you, those LONG bus rides ARE BACK KILLERS. i did my share of those, which is why i WILL NOT do them again, as this is also why there are airports....(and a credit card).
i think you will find that just about "all companies" have a forced dispatch system. many times, if you were to turn down a load, you go to the very bottom of any list, and God can tell you, you very well WILL BE waiting till the cows come home for your load.
yes, frankly, we are all nothing but a number. pure, plain and simple. the loads are what is important at all times. oh sure they tell you THE DRIVER and FAMILY are important. yes, the driver to MOVE those loads, and the families of the office workers who depend on mom or dad making their paycheck from YOUR work.
of the many OTR companies i have worked for, they told me, the Christmas you will be home for, but they never specified for HOW LONG i'd be home. heck, i was home one time just after midnight, Christmas eve, showered, shaved, went to bed. at or about 7PM Christmas night, i was back on the road again...you better believe i was P.O.'d....but what could i do...?? nothing.
in the end, try your best NO TO LISTEN to other drivers in orientation, or in the driver's lounge at ANY truck stop or company terminal. they will have you (and they WILL KNOW YOU ARE A NEWBIE), believe that everything is so bad, that one by one they are all leaving the company......but they have all "been leaving" for the past 5 to 10 years they have been there......!!!
everyone will be treated as kids. as many drivers ACT like kids. as you yourself stated, rules are rules to be obeyed NOT ignored. so why you (in my opinion) seemed "miffed" about it is something i cannot understand. you claim you had driven back in the 80's and 90's...you claim your dad owned 25 trucks......well then YOU KNOW how it is.....maybe you were "jaded" by the fact your dad was an owner and from what you observed it was all normal from THAT perspective.....maybe when you drove, things were better for driver's (although i too drove in the 90's and i ain't seen much difference from then to now), but the way these companies operate today with tight profit margins, they just have to treat driver's like kids, because frankly, from what I HAVE HAD to deal with, that's all there HAS BEEN coming into this business, KID'S and thier LACK of respect and lack of a good attitude towards customer service. this is all a trucking has to offer, is CUSTOMER SERVICE, we really have nothing else....
now you take those "know it all punks" that came into the business (and still are) and they are NOT doing things as per company policy. they are dressing like BUMS with thier BUMS hanging out for all to see...they ARE NOT respectful towards a shipper's or receiver's property, they ARE NOT road friendly, they have this "screw you" attitude, "i'm a big rig driver now, get outta my way now".....all because unemployment paid for thier education, or they paid for it themselves, and THINK they are OWED jobs right away that pay BIG money, and drop and hook only and home after working for 8 hours per day.
so the companies KNOW THIS and DEAL with it at every orientation. they (the companies) figure to lay down the LAWS NOW evenly to ALL new drivers to the company.
the next place you go to, just "play ball" DO NOT LISTEN TO the other drivers (or students) as stupid rumors get made up and passed on. just GO, get it done, get to driving....and if YOU DO NOT GET HOME FOR ANY HOLIDAY....??? SO WHAT...there's always THE NEXT HOLIDAY, you "might" get home for....you said it yourself, you "drove" back in the 80's and 90's.....and frankly IF YOU REALLY DID, then YOU KNOW ALL the hardships of driving OTR.......what would have ever made you think it was all peaches and cream now.....?????
good luck to you.l<enny Thanks this. -
You think those rules are bad! My company writes you up if you are wearing the wrong color underwear!. I guess it wouldn't be so bad but every time "Fritz" checks mine at the terminal it just makes me feel sick! LOLLast edited: Dec 13, 2010
