Weeeeellll, I'll tell ya'...that 78% is absolutely BS.
I just came eastbound from I-15 to Panguich, UT over UT143. Coming up the west side, there is a section of road about four miles long that is 13%...posted at the bottom, before you go up. Sign said trailers not recommended...it didn't say not allowed. So I went for it.
About eight miles up from the bottom and midway through the steepest part, where it really is 13%, there is a tight 15mph reverse "S" curve. If you are on this curve and somebody in a pickup tries to squeeze between you and the left shoulder, run them over. I made the insane mistake of trying to slow down for the guy and completely lost momentum. I got about halfway around the first corner and stalled out. With the trailer tires in the gravel on the right shoulder. Crap! Now I not only have to get moving, I have to do it from a dead stop, on a 13% grade with my trailer tires off the pavement. After I got the truck started again, I put it in lowest Granny, locked the differential and crept around the second part of the curve. I didn't even bother to look behind me to see what that trailer was doing. I figured if it didn't like riding in the dirt, it would flip and I would drag it up on its side, but once I got moving, I was not going to stop, even if Powhattan himself was standing in front the truck.
Near the top, there is a little town that people actually live in. Just before you get into that town, there is a low bridge that isn't signed as to its height. Still on an incline, but nowhere near what I had just climbed, I felt pretty confident in pulling the air brake, getting out of the truck and looking to see clearance. Yep, I fit under this little bridge and went for it. What an incredibly beautiful drive...so much to see!outerspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
I don't know how steep it was (off-topic??) but I have come into the San Diego area westbound (of course). You can go 14 miles without accelerating the truck (rev up only to downshift) and without touching the brakes (depending on your weight) from the second "elevation 4000 feet sign" to the Lake Jennings Parkway exit. That was fun.

Just had one Tuesday that was 17% grade up and down on OHIO Rt. 303 going through the Cuyahoga National Park National Forest. In terrible snowy road conditions none the less.

Bald eagle is a good one I run up it though loaded with a coal bucket and go to Karthaus. The hill into Punxy is 10% but its only a 1/2 mile. Have you ever run down Cresson on 22. Its only 5% but its 7 miles long. I have been on steeper grades but thats coming in and out of the strip-ins so they arent marked.

I am telling you there is a sign on HWY 105 here in Ontario that is posted 18% there are other hills on this road that are equally if not steeper than that one. Not long hills but steep for sure. You hit them doing 100 and in a matter of seconds are crawling at 20
