Weight lifting test?

    I know about the pre-hire tests for the most part. But what about the physical strength part? I mean, do we have to do a weight lifting test of sorts or just arm wrestle the nurse? :biggrin_25523: Seriously, being a bit older than a spring chicken I would appreciate advance notice of what the expectations are.     Depends what company you are working for. Usually though its like 50lbs in a basket that you pick up. Sometimes they make you stack weights from off the floor onto a shelf or table. It's really nothing hard. Nothing harder than opening your back doors on your trailer in the wind or cranking landing up on a loaded trailer.

    From what I have heard only some companies do the "strength" test. Neither Celadon or Werner subjected me to that.

    But here is what I have been told......." you pick up a box of the floor around 20 lbs I guess......and carry it to a shelf".........you do this several times. Other than that it's just the normal

    you know get in your sumo outfit and wrestle a 900 lb Japanese guy:naka:

    I work for Schneider. They had us do some lifting and walking in place, among other things. Then they would check your heart rate. If you heart rate was over a certain number, you failed that test. If you failed, say, two outta three tests, then you were not hired. That was all on the first day, which was a Sunday.

    JB Hunt does the lift weights, carry weights, up and down stairs for a few minutes. Oh yea they inspect the goods. Most others are just your basic physical. Most look for motor nerve bramage to make sure your dain is controlling your muscles correctly. Dunno why they scruntinise that when all you wanna do is drive around in a 40 ton vehicle at hiway speeds.

    your luck "wrestling with a nurse", she'd be 386 pounds, and stinks like the local garbage dump......

    those high heeled mini-skirted nurses are NOT real.......i know, i been in the hospital and health/wellness centers many times in my life......

    as for any "strength testing", probably some companies still do that, but in my years of DOT physicals and such, the only "testing" done was when i had to quickly run up/down 4 steps to check my pulse and heart beat rates.....this is as physical as my physicals have gone......

    if you think ahead, then just take daily walks, use some sort of "hand weights as you walk to build up your arm strength a bit. maybe cut down on "extra snacks" as well......but don't sweat it (no pun intended) about any tests.......

    the only "true test" you might fail, is if you "see" a gorgeous sexy nurse....and she has a beard....!!!! :biggrin_25522:

    Well, being a Grandmother and all, I am in good condition for the condition I am in. :biggrin_25523: I have been walking but didn't think about the hand weights. Good idea, thanks. :biggrin_25514:

    In the real world strength out here is good, but smarts is even better. For example, say you go to back up to a loaded trailer, the previous driver cranked the landing gear down way too much. Now there's a gap between upper and lower 5th wheel and you mush crank that heavy trailer down enough to prevent problems. As an alternative, place some 2x6 boards near the tires and back up on them to get 1.5 inches lift. Need more, double up that's 3 inches, make it easy on yourself.

    And the carrier shouldn't be concerned as to whether your heart is a ticking time bomb should they?

    Personally, I can't wait for better regs and higher standards for this industry. The sooner the 350lb buffet busters that can only wedge their axe handle wide butt into a pair of dirty sweat pants are gone the healthier and more positive outlook the industry will have.
