As reported earlier I couldn't get the driver's side cubby hole opened up because there are no keys for it.

So I was talking to another driver about how Donner is expected to be socked in by snow tonight and I began thinking 'oh snit, I don't have chains'.

Long story short, while I was organizing and still moving in (dark out) I could see from the passenger side cubby hole through to the other side that there are lots of chains behind the 'locked' cubby hole door (because it was dark and the lights came on when the door is opened). So I took a washrag and my vicegrips and got that door opened up lol. The reason it was difficult to open was due to heavy chains leaning up against it. So in the morning I will be shaking out all those chains to see what's what. Good chance there are too many actually.

Make sure you have a chain tool also. DOT requires enough to cover 7 tires and they can be all singles. I choose to carry two rails (doubles) and four singles, but that's just because I don't have any intention of hanging them. If I do, I believe my four singles should be enough. If they're not, might be time to find a safe place to hole up. Many of the guys who chain regularly will tell you doubles are a PITA.

The guy to talk to about chains is Otterhalf.

There was an extra chain tightener in my company truck that I snagged when I turned it in. Just saw one in the cubby hole too that the previous guy left here. There appeared to be 3 new bags of chains and two loose piles of chains which I figure are the double rails in there. Anyway I'll be shaking em out in the morning.

I called Phoenix to ask what's going on. The guy asked if I had been under a rock, there's no freight in Cali now. I said yeah lol I've been off for over a week. Hopefully will have my first load tomorrow though....

Not a stupid question. It ranges from $325/wk for the older straight puchase Freightliner Columbias to (I believe) close to $600 for a leased KW W900. Mine's $525/wk. No idea what Scottie's is.

congrats. i'm jealous. i've always wanted one of those q/c holders. actually, i really want a volvo 780 qualcomm holder.
i've been seriously thinking about taking the leap to fleecedom when my tuition reimbursement check comes in. then i can take more hometime, only accept the loads i want, buy lots of chrome...
but seriously, all i want is to strap a bicycle on the back, install an inverter big enough for a microwave, maybe a pet goldfish, and actually go home for hometime. as long as i can make truck payments, profit isn't a big deal. i do hope i can find a gently used 780 though.

Okay scottied: I've thought about the appropriate logo that you should have on the door of your truck..."Great Scott! Transport" LEASED TO SWIFT"

OH...for Scottie-eese, cubby hole means side compartment?? I gotcha. There are keys for it, but if the company didnt give you any, its on them, because they issued the first driver (previous driver anyway) a side compartment key, and Swift should be the ones to re-key the lock. I think there are only 4-6 combinations made anyway, for the KW900 and 660. Mine could probably open one (other than mine) sitting here in the Flyin' J.....AND, there is a little latch on the inside of the compartment that opens your side 'door' in the sleeper....

You know...I'm reading this thread and I can't believe I have an infraction for telling somebody to "go back to flipping hamburgers"!
