this is a soul sucking job but i do it because i need money. so, you have to find the right company for you. some folks are happy at werner and some are not. it's the same for any company. u do what u have to do. newbies will have to pay dues for at least 2 years before they can move up to a better company. dont get any tickets or accidents. do your pretrips and keep your csa points as low as possible. then you will be successful in this business.

Swift aint too bad.. just no JB Hunt..

Exactly! You have to start somewhere but after awhile these "one size fits all" rules do nothing but hinder a driver. Plus when your livelihood and well being depend on you performing your job safely and efficiently, idiotic and moronic rules are pretty stupid, lack common sense, and will hold you back. I like weekly hometime and lots of miles, nothing you'll find at a cdl mill. Most of the training companies act like their doing you an arbitrary favor in letting you go home for a few days.

The ones listed will get you a start, I started with Stevens Transport myself in Dallas, TX it was a great school in 96-97. Now the newer people coming out of there say its a nightmare, I think its the fact we have ex office workers and florist trying to be truck drivers, not use to this type of lifestyle crying about everything.

i was just in the same situation im getting in with my first choice company atm, however look for smaller ones, for the company who you've never seen an ad for, J&R Hall out of Ayr Ontario is a fantastic company, as is Mckinnon transport out of guelth, Trimac is very nice if u wanna do some bulk or tanker work. Schnieder is hit or miss ive heard good and bad, SGT is a no go. Kriska and Bison are also very very good places to work for. I have no idea of your area but these are all southern ontario, figured i'd at least give you some names as no one else is.
At the very least research them get a feel for what they are about (they can all be googled) and then look for similar carrier's in your area.
note: this is based off carrier tours from school and talking to people who have worked for or still work for these companies. like you im no expert just trying to help -
OP:
What are you looking for in a company? I love W/S, but I guarantee it isn't for everyone. You have to be ready to go out on your own right off the bat. It isn't the highest paying company, but you will be known by name.
There are other companies out there that are as good for different reasons, so it really depends on what you are looking for. No one can tell you that XXX is the best trucking company. It's only the best company for THEM.
If you want information on W/S, I'd be happy to share. I do run flatbed myself, but they do more dry van than flats. -
