Well Ihave been on a temp lay off for a couple weeks now. Yesterday morning the boss asked me about pulling doubles and what I need to do it.
Well it is just a simple test to get the endorsment. I read the doubles and tripples section and took the test and passed it.
Only problem is I have never pulled double trailers before and well the stuff he wants me to do is oversized ie 12'6" diameter tanks. I alsready pulled some of the tanks of a single trailer but they want us to pull a smaller trailer with a single tank on it.
I don't feel comfortable doing it with two trailers. I was kind of nervous doing it with a single trailer since I am not used to wide loads.
I called him this morning and told him that I am not comfortable pulling doubles. Actually I was having some anxioties about the thought of it to the point I had to take a pill for my nerves lastnight.
Now he is kinda pissed at me. Got real loud over the phone and even used a couple of them 4 letter words.
The other thing, I talked to one of the other drivers that was pulling doubles with these tanks and he did not make anymore pulling two trailers then I did pulling a single trailer.
Boss unhappy with me

Yeah, IDK about that either. Do they have someone to show you the ropes before they turn you loose with it? I'd be asking for some training, before being responsible for that kind of a load.
-
Doubles will turn the corner better than a 53 or even a 48.
I have pulled triples through town, piece of cake.
You are getting yourself all lathered up for nothing.
Now the pay issue is another thing..... It should be another rung up the ladder like hazmat.
-
Ya, I've got the endorsement as well, but like you, never pulled any. This guy should, at the least, give you a little training, no matter how easy it is.
ghostchild and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
I have more respect for you now...I think you did what was totally right, correct...usually that little voice inside...is 'correct'...
Yes, I have more respect for you now...
You showed concern and caution...better to do that than to cause a wreck...
Then what would the boss say...
"Oh, I never told you to do that"...
He would leave you hanging...
You did nothing wrong...and if your boss had a level head, he would totally appreciate your 'humility' towards the situation...
It took guts for you to admit you were about to do something above your skill set and confidence...
And I respect you for that...and I'm sure others do too...Prairie Boy and kid_cardiac Thank this. -
Front trailer would be a 53 step deck, the back trailer is a much smaller trailer big enough for one tank. Kind of a pup setup.
As I said, I had no big issues doing it with a single. Just not as relaxed as pulling a non oversized load.
Below was my first run with these tanks and a single trailer. They wanted to add another trailer which ment 3 tanks.
If I had pulled doubles before then I probly would have been more comfortable doing it. But I have never pulled more then one trailer ever in my life.
I can't wait till spuds are ready to be pulled out of the ground so I can get back under my spud wagon.Attached Files:

Well even a B train is limited to 65 ft
Not sure how you can hang a tag or pup off the back of a 53
Permit?
From the Fed DOT
"B-train combinations are subject to the same length limits (65 feet) as truck tractor-semitrailer-trailer combinations."
Or am I reading that wrong and that is a minimum length that states can limit to? -
Yes, you need a permit to pull it. Yes you can get the permits to do it.
-
LOL, now they can't pull doubles doing this anymore. State won't issue the permits required. So they are back to doing it with the single 53 ft steps. Since the boss hooked me up to a belly dump for hotmix work, he had to find another driver to do the job.
Not too happy about the hotmix work though. While I was down for a week, I spent this down time and fully polished up the truck etc. Now it is covered in TAR and mud. My nice shiny aluminum is covered in black stuff. -
You should definitely ask for some training hooking up, unhooking and pulling the doubles. You could really get hurt hooking and unhooking the dolly if you don't know what you're doing. Not to mention dropping a trailer. It is pretty much common sense but until you do it, it is easy to make a mistake..
Stand your ground because when it goes wrong you will be the one held responsible.Drivin_Dave and ghostchild Thank this.
