All right,I am gonna throw this out there.,Dave, since you have a problem backing trailers in the dark, why not give flatbedding a shot?
O.K.,In MY experience,no one eles's,but in MY experience,I have to back the flat up maybe 30% of the time, and backing in the dark at shipper or consignee?,-Maybe 7 times in 7 years,as in MY experience, hours of business hrs are 6am-6pm;not including job sites..
Why not give that a shot, you may like it.
Oh yeah,in Billings,Oklahomie for a few hrs,then home.. -
WoW you've had a charmed flatbedding life.....

I don't back into as many docks as door swingers do but I do my fair share. Probably once a day, sometimes more. One thing about it, it ain't easier with a spread than a closed tandem, but you get used to it. -
One obvious reason that comes to mind is that he couldn't even handle the basics of trucking as a door swinger and seems to be lacking in his willingness to pay attention to something as simple as a door.
Flatbedding can and usually is a lot more detail oriented work and requires that you be on your game most of the time and it requires something else that Dave seems to lack...The ability to put forth some hard work at times.
I back a lot... As Les said, The spread is more of a challenge to back than a closed tandem. -
It's funny listening to drivers knocking on us flat/steel haulers about backing up. The reality of it is, we are probably better at it than most of them, its just they have it easier.
I'd be willing to bet half of them would have the truck stalled and bound up within the first 10 minutes.....? -
I get that a lot..."Flatbedders can't back" as I watch some door slammer struggle for 15 minutes to back into a spot just like the one I just blindside backed into and then give up and go park by the scale or in the driveway or some other doorslammer favorite place.
I regularly back into places that MOST doorslammers would say were impossible to get into and yet almost daily I hear some moron on the radio saying "Flatbedders can't back."
If you can't back, flatbeds are probably not a good place to try and hide.
Black_379, Les2, Injun and 1 other person Thank this. -
When I started driving, my trainer always stated that a flat bedder could not back up.
It really did not take long to figure he was not too bright.
I have watched many flatbedders get into tight spots at the truckstops. Not to mention, they have those spreads as well. -
a dump valve for the back axel is your freind... :smt003
back on topic....
I'm in a service plaza 'bout half way across the OH Pike.....
Some numb nut with straight pipes on what looks like a JB Hunt lease truck of all things is driving in circles around the the lot which is maybe 1/4 full...Somehow I get the feeling said numb nut is about to land in the spot next to me and idle that POS up like a jet airplane waiting too taxi.... :smt108
I won't be pleased if that happens..The Challenger Thanks this. -
If you like a broken trailer frame at the front suspension mount points. -
Can you give me a brief explanation of how that would occur? I'm all about not tearing ##### up.
