TOP OFF YOUR FUEL AT WENDOVER!!!
You won't like the price of diesel in Ely....from delivery, you only have 220 or so miles to Vegas down 318...about 280 to Reno...
Well you won't get to hear the ladies callin you.....the best route to Ely is drop south at Wendover (Alt 93) about 35 miles to US 93....follow through McGill and into East Ely, continue on Aultman (US50/93) then turn left (south) on US 93...about 3 miles (top of the hill) take the truck route for US 6....about 28 miles you will see NV 318 (called the Sunnyside Short-cut) you have about 25 miles from the intersection.
Go through the town of Lund and then about 15-20 miles on your right side...(West)
Sunnyside is the story of the Whipple Ranch in the White River Valley. It started with a ranch owned by a man named Horton. He built the ranch in the 1880s and soon a small settlement grew up around it. John Whipple bought the Horton Ranch in the fall of 1904. He moved his family to Sunnyside after Christmas of that year. He had 200 head of beef cattle on the ranch in 1904 and 1905. Whipple also had the mail route from Pioche to Sunnyside, a trip that took two days by buggy. He worked the route for two years then hired a man to do the job. The hired man lost a horse on one of his trips in 1906 and Whipple went to look for the horse. While searching, he found an outcropping of rock that turned out to be high-grade silver ore. This was later developed into the Silver Horn mine. His son, Clair, leased the ranch from his father and later purchased it in 1940. Sunnyside had a population of around twenty-seven, most of whom worked on the ranch. In 1962, they sold the property to the Johnson family, the present owners. The ranch is in a beautiful setting and is well worth seeing.
The Horton family still have cattle holdings and acreage in East Ely....as you are going over the railroad overpass (White Pine County Golf Course to the right)...at the top of the overpass looking left, you can see the ranch house and their property goes all the way East to the foothills of the Schell Creek Range, 15 miles south and 8 miles North all along the foothills...the fairgrounds (on your left just before the overpass) is actually the western edge of the Horton Ranch. Into town about 1/2 mile you will see a sign "William B. Ririe Memorial Hospital"....Dr. Ririe delivered my mother, and came to Los Angeles to deliver me! Talk about a house call!!!Bumpy Thanks this. -
