Swift has a terminal in Michigan. Southwest of Detroit off 275 in New Boston.

I'm going OTR for a brief stint.

Yup. That would be my "home" terminal. It's a bit over 3 hours from here. Not TOO far away, but not that close, especially in winter. The only issue is that it's in the eastern side of the state. I'm in the Western side, and depending on weather, I can be closer to Gary Indiana, which is where I would do my last week of road training before crossing the state line to test out. I don't see too many Swifties in my neck of the woods, but the recruiter in Columbus says there's "no problem" with getting me home.

And recruiters always tell the whole truth, don't they? :)

I was wondering if you were feeling a bit claustrophobic up there and itching to stretch your legs.

I've had a few loads up there in my 1.5 years with Swift. First time, massive thunderstorms and high winds I thought the sky would swallow up Michigan. Detroit freaks me out with the low bridges along the freeway, always ducking every time I go under one. Places I'd heard about but never dreamed of seeing-- Flint (Fahrenheit 911), Battle Creek (seen that on cereal boxes since I was a kid, thought it was some far off fairy land) and Paw Paw, just like that name.

I believe Swift has a Chrysler account up there, anyway, there is a Macro for Chrysler loads, I had to send that Macro once. Walmart in Coldwater, saw several Swifties all up in there as well.

There's all kinds of freight up there, Great Lakes dedicated accounts as well I hear. Last time I was up there they bounced me on several loads between Wisconsin and Michigan.

Youngstown OH today/tonite, will finish load tomorrow, tuckered out after pulling 25 mile per hour hills, descending 45 MPH then finally getting to a flat area and boom 45 zone construction forever. Scuttlebutt says the work will be done the day before the snow comes.

Kris is the Columbus recruiter I've been in touch with. She did like the fact that I have a valid US passport; she said it makes crossing the Detroit border much easier. :)

But she was a bit evasive when I asked this: If I am that close to two terminals (Gary and Detroit), would Swift allow me to take the truck all the way home or will I have to plan on "home" as a stop on the way to or from something? I think I know the answer from others on TTR, but it sure would be nice to hear a recruiter tell me.

Just tell her that being coy isn't instilling a great volume of confidence in your choice.

Three hours from Detroit. Heck, man, Michigan is only four hours wide. There's a guy out of Grand Rapids working out of the Gary terminal. Last time I was there, they had trucks. But that was last year.

I know. I'm just south of Grand Rapids, on the west side of the state, about 30 minutes from Big Blue. Detroit is on the east side, just across the river from Windsor, Ontario. I'm equidistant from Gary and Detroit. In fact, Gary is where I would go for the last week of my road training before driving up the road 20 miles to take the CDL test in Michigan.

Making the drive in either direction during pretty good weather isn't bad, but in a couple of months, it won't be much fun. Lake-effect snow in one direction, black ice and nasty traffic in the other.

Oh, the troubles I've seen. And I'm still waiting on Mama Swift's answer...!

Yes, no, maybe, not on your life and true. Wait. Was this multiple choice? What was the question? Is this a test?
