Had a jetboat back in the 80s running a mondello built olds 455 with batten heads.

Was very fun running bridge to bridge in the intracoastal.

Yep, it's a blast. I run in small lakes out here. Can't really afford to feed the thing at the moment. It was a pretty quiet summer for me.

42 and starting over in the real word. 20 years as government driver (not real trucking) I'm told.

    Good luck

    Welcome aboard!
I can relate on several levels,I just had my one year anniversary as a driver having changed careers at age 54,just turned 55 last Saturday.
I've been OTR and then regional dedicated but I just landed a daycab job that will get me home every day and only working only 5 days a week.
I own a home in the country near some beautiful lakes here in SW Washington and my boats have been pretty much quiet since I lost my old job in May '09,hope to be back on the water next Summer.
My hotrod is '76 Tahiti,460 Ford / Berk jet, motor is apart right now but I have nearly everything to put her back up.
Speedpro forged pistons .030 over,Eagle forged I-Beam rods,D0VE-C heads converted to CJ with massive porting and Ford Racing stainless valves and Miller Engineering roller rockers, the heads and block as well as the Melling oil pump were done up by Paul Kane at http://www.highflowdynamics.com/ from down your way.
I have an Offenhauser dual quad tunnel-ram intake and a pair of Holley 660 center-squit carbs to top her off.

Sweet boat! Yep, my heads are also DOVE-C ported all to hell...can almost put my fist in the ports.
I have spoken with Paul Pane a few times myself. Seems like everybody who owns a Ford knows him.

I actually think changing careers at this point will be pretty easy if I can just qualify for the financing. I don't care if I ever pick up a wrench in a shop ever again. Having been a smog tech for 17 years means nothing right now. Wyotech spits out smog techs by the truckload, and the wages are barely minimum wage if you can even find a position. I'm done with it.

Western Pacific Truck School there in Modesto. I attended the Stockton campus. 1.5 years into my new career now, and not looking back.

Some of the best classes are the ones vocational schools offer.
Here they are about 10 weeks yet 1/2 the cost of the CDL "Mill style" schools.
    That's some serious training...

    But,
I hope you realize the average pay out there, especially for a 1st time company driver starting out...
Most of the company drivers I know, struggle to even get into the $40s a year.
Some make more and some make even less....

Any good amount of home time and the numbers fall off from there...

..just make sure you know the real financial aspects and then if it works for you, I say go for it and best of luck......:yes2557:.
    Determination is the key...

Yeah it's like that at a lot of jobs,I've been a custom cabinetmaker for 35 years,10 years as a design guy doing CAD drawings on the computer.
I can't find a decent paying job what with immigrant labor and Chinese imports coming in now, beside the housing market being as bad as it is the competition for what little work there is out there is awful,I lost a job after 24 years with one company and in a way it's been good.
Like you I'll never go back and I won't miss it at all.

    jet460 Thanks this.
