Actually I don't see the Fed as the problem. Now if you wanna talk politics, take it to the politics forum. I'll waste you there.

Check out the history of trucking and you will find that driver's needs have always been secondary to delivering the freight and making money. Trucking companies treated their drivers as nothing more than pack mules so the government established hours of service. The first "sleeper" was nothing more than a box under the trailer, you had a headlamp for heat and used a lantern to tell the driver you needed to stop.
This is not isolated to trucking companies. Does anyone remember why we have child labor laws? How about all the other protections workers have? Did you know that companies used to calculate how many workers would die on a project? If I remember correctly it was estimated that one worker would die for each floor of the Empire State building. Do you know why we have minimum wage laws?
As long as companies see labor as an expense and liability nothing will change. Good businesses understand labor is an investment. If you want the best you have to pay the best and give the best treatment. Southwest Airlines is almost always at or near the top in customer satisfaction. Part of their philosophy is that if they take care of their employees, their employees will take care of the customer. It will take time, but things are beginning to change.
Courts are now holding shippers responsible for the carriers they choose. There was a recent lawsuit that held the shipper responsible because they chose a carrier based on rate alone. They were held negligent for not taking the safety rating of the carrier into account. It will trickle down, eventually. Competition for drivers, especially good ones will drive pay up. With that the standards for drivers will also go up. That's the idea behind CSA. Shippers have to look at the quality of the companies they use, companies have to be choosier on the drivers they use, good drivers will expect more pay and better working conditions. The other side is that as rates rise so will inflation.pathfinder1361, Gearjammin' Penguin and scottied67 Thank this. -

A lot of Americans sit around on Saturday and Sunday watching college and professional football games while swilling their beer and bashing unions while forgetting that organized labor brought them the 'Weekend'. Retirement plans, 8 hour work day, overtime after 40 hours? Thank you organized labor.
It's not just trucking that is the rip off industry. Just about every occupation in America is designed to keep the worker under financial, emotional, social, etc control.
The Davis Bacon Act was designed to prevent lower paid workers from cheap states from booming into higher paying states to trade their labor. It is funny to me that we have come full circle now with organized labor hatin' owner operators on a major campaign of "Say No To Cheap Freight"-- they are borrowing a page from the main cornerstone of Union's backbone book!
Another interesting thing to me is the vast majority of ordinary truck drivers are predominantly conservative voting citizens. Somebody is doing a fantastic job of mind control on the masses lol. There is an agenda and it's all about making you feel good about your low pay. Original poster is seeing the light.
