How long had you been out of trucking when Crete hired you? I was thinking about getting back into trucking but have been out of it for almost 3 years. I did not know Crete did training for drivers whom had been out of it for awhile.

The pros and cons of Crete are well known to me. When the crap started hitting the fan in 2008, it was time to leave. I was there when times were still good. I remember how good it was before Duane Acklies' worthless, idiot son-in-law, Tonn, took complete control.

Early in 2008, everything started to change. Werner, JB and others also changed at the same time. It's no coincidence. They had meetings to discuss the future of the industry as they all do each year. What to pay us and what to cheat us out of.

One company, Heartland Express, actually started using some of those proposals.
They were already starting to regionalize their operation, so it was easy to complete it in a very short time.

Because they have been successful by tricking drivers into delivering city or local loads, they lowered their operating cost dramatically. You see, when the drivers get their paystubs, they find out they were NOT PAID for the loads!!! Heartland thinks it's legal to NOT PAY YOU for working. They are wrong, of course.

It is only a matter of time before Crete and other large companies will try this illegal activity. The Crete I worked for was a decent company. I chose to remember the good times. These days, it sucks.

A small to medium-sized company is best if you can find one suitable to you. If it is owned by an individual or family, that is usually best (NOT always).

Camille at Crete Carrier | Shaffer Trucking recruiting is pretty funny because after completing the application process she said that the SAGE school at LCTI is not on the list of "approved" schools and that I need to get 6-12 months experience before applying again. Why do i think that is funny? Because All-State Career Schools are on the approved list. As i listed in a truck driver school thread months ago those locations, the recruiter, and current students made me almost rethink getting into trucking because that place was super ghetto.. Anyhow, i don't see what the point was telling me to reapply in 6 months because after 6 months I can get in with the local bulk hauler and make much better money than what Crete is offering. Any how. No harm and no foul.

There .50 mileage compensation covers all incidentals from what I here.

Other company's pay lower then pay by hr on a local heartland pays you a higher mileage rate even if you don't do a local. It's a big win if you have no layover, dentition, local work etc...:biggrin_25525:

I'll say that the time i was with CCC (2 years), they did me wrong a few times. But big deal. One time that really stands out was the time i was stuck in Holdredge, NE (BD) for three days and they would not dispatch me without an empty trailer. The shipper had none, and would not unload the one i brought in because it was a holiday weekend. This was Friday afternoon. Stuck. THEN, after the three day holiday (Labor Day) dispatch decides its ok to bobtail me 90 miles for a load. Tuesday morning. That conversation did not go well at all...

That said, for the most part they were a good company. Sometimes i didn't get my detention when it was a legit request, but ya know - as i said mostly they did right by me. I just don't get why truck drivers whine and cry so much sometimes. I'm not completely without guilt, but geez. Just move the white box around, be quiet, and if you think there's a better company out there - quit CCC. I can tell you with certainty: As far as mega-carriers go, you will not find one better.

I left because i only wanted to drive part-time and CCC doesnt offer a 7 on / off program. If they did, i'd be back tmrw.

my company did that stuff as well, moving mt trailers for free was expected and delivering local was paid but at a very low rate, the worst part was having to pay tolls with cash and not knowing when youd be reimbursed which was costly at times, sometimes waiting 3 weeks or being "secretly" denied reimbursement.

worst situation you can be in is being with a company that has alot of debt, or worse yet, a company that is basically bankrupt,or is literally bankrupt.
