Like Scott said I think they missed a big piece of the puzzle...the School buses that had faulty breaks!!!! I don't know about you but I never see a school bus at the scales getting inspected...maybe its time DOT get on these schools just like they are up our butts all the time...
This could have been prevented if the bus drivers weren't following so close and the kid paid more attention..... Hell I have seen cops on the phone not hands free driving like maniacs...but whos gonna pull them over??? There are laws already on the books banning this kind of behavior wether it be texting or not using hands free devices...but the big problem is the complete lack of enforcement...

In California cops are exempt from the hands-free laws... I guess it is ok for them to partake in a driving activity that (according to their studies) is more dangerous then drunk driving. LoL.

Also in Cali CDL A & B drivers along with taxi, and tow truck drivers were exempt from the 2008 hands-free law. But I think the exemption "sun-set" on July 1. Sprint Nextel probably had a lot to do with the exemption...

I've also heard 2013 as the sun-set date, but that is irrelevant now with the FMCSA rule.

On the news the national transportation board is now pushing for complete ban of any and all cell phone usage while in a vehicle, with the exception of GPS.

I would also say that QCing is the same as texting. In fact personaly I think QC is much more distracting and dangrous than using the phone with headset/bluetooth/etc. With the one you flip open the phone or push a botton and talk all the while watching where you are going and what is going around you. With the other you must look over and read a screen that is at best giggling and at worse bouncing around, comprehend what you are reading and then type a response, while at the same time operating your vehicle in a safe manner. Give me a cell phone over QC any day.

You don't think the brakes on the school busses contributed to the accident?!? WERE THEY EVEN USED?!? How does texting in a pickup get a bus to splatter you across the sleeper of a Volvo cab!?!

Reuters article I read this morning talking about flawed data used for banning cell phones in cars ie. dialing and talking on the phone is not as distracting as was let on.

But to hear some of the idiots on this board tell it...Using a phone is worse than DUI, These guys seem to think that just because they can't walk and chew gum at the same time that the rest of us must be similarly afflicted!

The school bus drivers were probably distracted by those noisy kids in the back. Ban kids from school busses!!

Distracted driving is an epidemic, but passing laws to ban cell phone use isn't going to do anything with the current lack of enforcement. I rarely see a cop on my 50 mile commute, what's to stop me from using my phone?

We need a police state to enforce laws...
