We had one of our trucks temporary impounded and the driver almost arrested when going to collect a load from a large steel merchant.
Turns out a criminal syndicate would infiltrate/hack their order book.
They would then send a fake order on the purchasing companies forged letterhead to a freight company to collect the order.
They would have legitimate collection numbers etc.
They would then get you to deliver it to a "lay down area" next to a construction site.
They would then just transship on to another get away truck.
When the crooks called still pretending to be legitimate I pretended that we were delayed and could not make it.
The next day they contacted us again to ask us to collect at another supplier.
This is a fortune 500 company.
As this was the 23rd of December and I knew that that company had closed dispatch I explained that it was to late.
They explained that they had made special arrangements and my truck would be loaded.
Knowing this was a criminal syndicate I contacted the head of security and sent a mail to the regional commercial director.
The way I see it there had to be an inside person to arrange after hours loading.
I would have thought there would be some interest.
Nothing , seems they couldn't to care less.
They did not even call back.

Criminals somehow gain info on orders placed on a steel mill by a large customer.
Criminals have the correct order number and they also get hold of the collection number that the mill sends to the customer.
They then pretend to be the customer and contact a transporter and send them the details asking to collect the load.
They send all the correct looking documents with the correct numbers as held by the steel mill.
They then sit back and watch if you get out of the mill with the load.
The delivery address is usually a big construction site where there are a lot of trucks loading and off loading where 2 more trucks wont look out of place.
They then just transship the load on to another truck and disappear.
I was aware of this scam and when they tried to pull it of using me as the transporter.
I would have thought the Mill would be interested as we could pull a sting and catch these guys.
They could not care enough to even call back.
The criminals have to have inside info , so I could not understand the no care attitude.

The person who received your warning may have been the inside contact!
Or maybe THEY are pulling the scam? Who better to resell the stolen steel? -
99.99% of the time, it's an inside job.

There had to be inside people involved in order to supply all the correct load numbers etc.
I thought that the people I alerted may well have been involved. -
Most company thefts come from employee's.
