    Hey Guys,

Two things to start out. Not trying to sell anyone anything and I have posted in another area. Just lookin to get some opinions.

What do you Refer guys think of on-board scales. I know people will say, "oh my air gauges work just fine".
I'm not looking for that mainly do you think it could help? If so how and why? I know scales are more expensive then a 30dollar air gauge, I hear that. But if you were given 500bucks to spend on a scale and only could on a scale. Would you and what do you think?

    Thanks

Give me the $500 and then we'll talk. :)

Who could refuse if you were given the money? I could load 42,000 with an air gauge and feel comfortable. Anything over I would scale. But a better system would be more than welcome.

Most of the time with reefer, I know how much I am hauling without having to weigh.

If I have 800 cases at 50 lbs each, simple math tells me I have 40,000 lbs of product plus pallets.

But yea, if you want to give me the $500 then I will install scales on my reefer.

Ever have it where they tell you they loaded 50 cases but really they loaded 60 or something like that?

Can those shift to put you heavy on an axle group? Still good GVW but getting nailed on say Drive?

A shipper did that to me today, bills say 42500 with pallets, went to a cat scale and was 79960. My truck has a drive scale and its pretty accurate. It read 33.8 I scaled at 12000/33980/33980 LOL first shot.

But they snuck an extra 3000 lbs. on me. As I know Im only close to max gross with 45500 or so.

The scale is just like the air guage as far as I know, just gives a drive axle weight? At least mine does. So much like an air guage, you learn its accuracy and use it as a tool. But dont rely on it, always get a cat scale if youre that heavy.

I had a RiteWeigh scale in my Cascadia. It was invaluable. They don't cost $500. They're a little closer to $120.

why do shippers do that? it happened to me. BOLS said 42000 and they loaded 46000. is it to get a break on the rates? should have found the nearest food pantry....

They do it to save on freight cost. If they can move 46,000 for the same cost as 42,000, they win. Every 10 or so loads at that pace would equal a free load shipped!

A lot of shippers count product weight only, conveniently forgetting that 30 Chep pallets will weigh 2,400 pounds. Check your bills for pallets being listed with freight.
